Odyssey Satisfying
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A canceled Disney parade, a Fenway win streak, and a gas-station empire picking a fight with a tiny Ohio minimart somehow belong in the same conversation, and we prove it. We kick things off with life updates from Florida to Boston, including the kind of travel friction you only understand after you’ve tried to drive in a city built like a historical maze.
Then we get into the headline that made us stop and stare: Buc-ee’s filing a trademark lawsuit over a beaver logo. We talk brand control, why “customer confusion” arguments can feel ridiculous, and how corporate pressure lands when the target is a local business. From there, Reddit Roulette brings a messy Am I the Asshole scenario about a child-free wedding, two young kids, postpartum anxiety, ADHD, resentment language, and what support actually means when someone is overwhelmed.
The main event is our Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey review, including why the three-hour runtime flies, how practical effects and 70mm IMAX craftsmanship change the feel of key sequences, and which scenes hit hardest: the Cyclops, the witch transformation, the Trojan horse realism, and Nolan’s haunting version of Hades. We also tackle casting controversy and representation without losing the plot, because it’s a mythic story about consequence, collateral damage, and finally owning what you’ve done.

Florida Trip And Disney Rainout
SPEAKER_04tell you know what? Since you want to do around the room, let's start with you. What does your pulse look like? And tell everybody why you went to Florida.
SPEAKER_05Uh pulse is like, I don't know, I'm chilling. Um it's probably like a I don't know, what's the chill rate? 70?
SPEAKER_0470's good.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah, I'm chilling. Uh so we went to Florida because my wonderful wife came to the contest. On Petersburg 21 493 day trip to St. Petersburg Day Water, Florida. This is my current location.
SPEAKER_04His current location poolside. For those of you that are listening. Poolside with umbrellas and some kind of martini in his hand, I'm sure.
SPEAKER_05Oh no martini, it's really fucking hot is not a lot of things.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that fl that Florida heat's different, buddy. You're closer to the equator.
SPEAKER_05Well, I will say this, we went to we went to Disney World yesterday. Um surprisingly horrible. Was it hot? Yeah, but it was it was like it wasn't manageable.
SPEAKER_04Right. Well good, good, good, good. And you had a you had a good time at Disney, yeah?
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. Um the only thing that sucks is it was sunny all day until about I don't know eight. And then it started raining and thundering from like Florida rain.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Florida rain. Florida weather.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I know. And it continued on the water.
SPEAKER_02The only thing that sucks is it was sunny all day. I was gonna point that out after the story.
SPEAKER_03It was sunny all day. What do you mean? What?
SPEAKER_02What? It was a gorgeous day. Fucking it was amazing, and the sun went down and then it rained.
SPEAKER_05It was terrible. So but we were sitting there, we found our spot because our wonderful uh Miss Miss Miss Cheeks said, Hey, um said, Hey, get a spot at like seven for the for the night parade because it's gonna be amazing. So we found a really good spot. We were like probably like we were like in front of the castle. And when it was storming, we pulled the ponchos out and we were sitting there, and all of a sudden they came on probably about 45 minutes later and said, Yeah, so it was about 845. And we're like, Yeah, uh, the parade's canceled.
SPEAKER_02Awww. Damn.
SPEAKER_05What a bummer! Hey, but at least you had ponchos.
SPEAKER_04Right, yeah, ponchos kept you dry.
SPEAKER_05We were sitting there from like uh 45. You know, yeah. We want to skip some fireworks, and I was like, I don't even know. Like, what happens if we stay here and then it can't find the fireworks? And we have a two-hour drive after we got it done.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I was like, you know what? I don't know if it's worth it. I was like, fireworks to fireworks. I said, you know what, let's go ahead and just bounce. So we loaded up and left at about nine. Um, it is what it is. Um, I don't know if they have the fireworks. For the sake of my sanity, I'm gonna say they did not have the fireworks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. For his headcanon is they never had the fireworks because he he didn't he didn't so he didn't miss them. They didn't have them, so he didn't miss them. Exactly. If you don't think about it.
SPEAKER_05Outside of outside of that, I mean it was it was I mean it was a wonderful, fabulous trip.
SPEAKER_07So in the sunshine, forget about the sunshine, that was the street party.
SPEAKER_04Fuck the sunshine. So Grizz has a question.
SPEAKER_02Uh which park did you go to? Magic Kingdom. Magic Park.
SPEAKER_05The Park. Yes. Yes. Yeah, because we only had one day. Um because this trip was free. Oh, since this trip was free, we uh I splurged on the premium lightning pass. Okay, yeah, which gave us basically quick admission to every ride, one time in the park.
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_01Really packed it in. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Like for the people for the people listening that don't know, um, Meeseeks is like a Disney queen. Like, she knows everything about Disney.
SPEAKER_01She's been multi- No, it is a very recent obsession, but it has become an obsession. I am focused.
SPEAKER_04I think Grizz is I think Grizz and Miss Meeseeks are gonna be our go-to Disney. I've never been worse books. So I've never been.
SPEAKER_01What's your hot take?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh my hot take is if you don't have children, Magic Kingdom is not worth it.
SPEAKER_01Oh I agree with that because honestly, Animal Kingdom is the absolute goat. Animal Kingdom is goated.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I like Animal Kingdom because it does have a lot, and it has Pandora, which is like the Avatar world that James Cameron built. Um the blue ones. Um for the red hats out there, it's the blue people. Uh moving on. Um, the the other park that I like is uh you know the Hollywood Studios because it has Star Wars.
SPEAKER_07I didn't, I thought it was all just one thing.
SPEAKER_02That's how they got four parks.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, they got they got a lot out there.
SPEAKER_05Uh it's four different parks. I want to plan like a whole bigger one. So the reason you picked Magic Kingdom, so do I, but the reason we picked Magic Kingdom is because that's the staple. And I do. Yeah, it's classic. If you've never spent it's worth going.
SPEAKER_01It is right. Um it's the most magical, I think. Like it feels the most magical.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, Magic Kingdom has the uh no fly. Like planes can't fly over Magic Kingdom, so you feel like you're in another world.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_07You guys are making me feel more and more poor with every sentence.
SPEAKER_04Uh so for you poor people out there, we we he they went to the castle, peasant. Oh, they'll feature your crumbs. They built a moat to keep Templeton out specifically.
SPEAKER_07You know, we can't swim.
SPEAKER_04I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, continue. No, listen, me and me and Yeti, we swam. We were tired as fuck, but we swam. We know how to swim. We know how to get across. But no, I'm I'm glad you guys are having fun. You're having time with your life. Yeah, enjoy enjoy that uh enjoy that dastardly sun, I guess, because apparently you have beef with Florida, Florida sunshine, which is crazy in itself.
SPEAKER_05But I'm just sitting here and I'm melting.
SPEAKER_04I'm allergic to nice days. I don't know what to say.
SPEAKER_02I mean, to be clear, they are allergic to the heat.
SPEAKER_04You're not wrong. Like he is out of his element. He should he should be. You know what? Next time, go to Alaska. That will. Yeah, go to Alaska. Yeah, go to Alaska. Get get back in here.
SPEAKER_02Stop in Seattle first.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, stop in Seattle, then go to Alaska. Oh, that'll do that. Connecting flight. Let's go. Let's go. So, all right. I'm glad you
Boston Travel And Fenway Energy
SPEAKER_04guys are having fun. Glad you're chill. Um, let's go, Miss Meeseeks. What'd your pulse look like? What's your pulse look like, right?
SPEAKER_05Okay, so I practice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_05I actually practice this.
SPEAKER_07I thought you guys got it five.
SPEAKER_01All right, bye.
SPEAKER_07Enjoy that terrible sunshine.
SPEAKER_01It's a 76.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_01Nice. Right now. Um, it probably is because I was just thinking about Disney and how it's such a magical place. That's it. And truly very obsessed. But no, it's been just kind of moving and grooving. I've been super busy. I got back. I missed the last podcast because I had just gotten back from Boston, a week up in Boston. Blasting. Oh my gosh. And I went to my first Red Sox game.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Was that fun? Did you have Red Sox? Yeah, I was reds. It's the next same thing. Was it fun?
SPEAKER_01It was a blast. And Fenway is like the oldest park in the United States. And so I left my Red Sox at home under you.
SPEAKER_04That's all right. That's all right. Damn it. Did you have red legs?
SPEAKER_01No, I think the Reds.
SPEAKER_04I don't think they did. Was the Ray Red and Ball besides the socks?
SPEAKER_01They played Tampa Bay.
SPEAKER_03Uh it was Buccaneers? God damn it.
SPEAKER_01Fair enough. Yep.
SPEAKER_07I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, they played the wins. But what was super cool is they were on like a 12-game win streak.
SPEAKER_08Oh.
SPEAKER_01And so the whole vibe of Fenway was just up. All the shirts were off. All the men's shirts were off all over the place.
SPEAKER_04Like just everybody's shirts were off.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm telling you it's like a thing in baseball right now. It's like a whole trend.
SPEAKER_03Okay. No, it is. I didn't.
SPEAKER_01So late. And we ended up winning. Six seven. It was a good one.
SPEAKER_07No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01We ended up winning. And I basically was adopted by my whole section. I was there solo dolo. Like I love, I go on business travel a lot. And within that, I try I try to tack on some like fun, some local flavor. I take might take an extra day, whatever. Uh so I went solo and operating in Boston. Respectfully fuck the infrastructure up there. You can really feel how like founding father-ish it is. And you're like, I hate that.
SPEAKER_04Still cobblestone roads.
SPEAKER_01No, like it's the layouts are so different, like between the Midwest and like the East Coast. Like, I it's hard to describe. I couldn't like orient myself driving through Boston.
SPEAKER_04Is it like a wagon wheel type design?
SPEAKER_01Or I don't really I can't figure it out. I can't really figure it out, but it's different, is what I will say. And I think anybody who drives over there and like any other part of the country would probably understand. Like well, people the infrastructure is very different.
SPEAKER_04People of Boston, if you're listening, I don't know if you are or not, but listen up. We need to know. Fix it. Talk to us. What's it like? What's it like traveling in Boston? Is it a nightmare? Is it like, are you used to it? But but like, can you see it from like an outsider's perspective and be like, yeah, I can see how it could be difficult. If you're listening, let us know. Talk to us.
SPEAKER_03So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Do you park it?
SPEAKER_04Do you park it in the Havid Yad? Park your car in Havid Yad. Pocky cat in the Havid Yad.
SPEAKER_01Like assholes I've ever met in my life. Like they're gonna there it is.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Friendly asshole.
SPEAKER_01They're gonna be friendly, and I was like, And they're gonna like, but they are like they're so helpful. I was on, I was leaving the airport. I was one of the last people on the airport bus to go get the car rentals. And I mean, I have like a full suitcase, my carry-on, my personal item. Like, I'm pretty, I maxed out my luggage situation, and I'm the last person on the bus. And like you sweat, like I I don't know about anybody else. I get nervous. I'm like, everybody's looking at me, people are judging me, people hate me. Um, and like I'm gonna three dudes volunteered to give up their seat once I got all settled on the bus. Like, I'm clearly the last person. They're like, Hey, if you want to sit down, I'll give you my seat. So, like, they're gonna sigh at you for like holding them up, but once you're there, they're like, Do you want my seat?
SPEAKER_04Remember, remember the conversation we had? The difference between nice and kind.
SPEAKER_07Like, they'll call you, they'll call you a fucking moron, but they'll help you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're gonna be like, Yeah, maybe if you didn't bring all your fucking clothes, you fucking asshole. But here, have a fucking seat. Have a fucking seat.
SPEAKER_02We're all gonna be late, but you know what?
SPEAKER_04Have a seat. Have a seat.
SPEAKER_01It's a very interesting experience, but I respect it because I'm like, actually, I relate. Cause like, same.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, no, that's that's I mean, they just say what everybody else is thinking anyway.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like, I hate that I'm inconvenienced about this, but I'm gonna be fucking helpful. Yeah, I'm gonna be helpful as much as I can.
SPEAKER_02The lesson that we all should be learning is speak our minds a little more.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's the lesson, the takeaway would be be helpful, yeah, be helpful, be mindful, and be an asshole when you need to.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's okay to say what you say what you're feeling, you know what I mean? It's okay to be. Yeah. But that that's awesome. I'm glad you got to experience the uh Red Sox in in Baston. Um I'm glad you got a little bit of a little bit of taste of that. Um good good to know you got you have new Boston friends. You can go up there and be like, hey. Hey, Boston friends. Let's let's let's go have some fun. I have a fly in here. I don't know how it got in here. I'm gonna
Pet Health Update And Washington Fires
SPEAKER_04have to kill it. I'm sorry, PETA. It's a joke. So anyway, um relocate. Yeah, I'm gonna relocate it somewhere outside. I promise it's gonna be relocated. All right, yeah. So, Grizz. See, Grizz neck. What does your pulse look like? I'm gonna be looking for this fly the entire time, but go ahead.
SPEAKER_02Um, well, I too checked my watch and it said 80 beats per minute a minute ago. Uh, it's probably still there. I have my iced coffee. I'm gonna took my dog out. I woke up early today and took a shower before the show. I'm in a grown-ass man. I might have to say you take a dog to wear the dog? She I she um she's got a vet appointment on the 24th for those who care. My dog has lung cancer, and uh that's sad. Uh it is sad, but also, you know what? It's the circle of life. You know, if it's not gonna be cancer, it was just gonna be something else. That's true. You know, we all we all we all go down.
SPEAKER_07You you love your dog, that's your kid, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I love her. That my love's not gonna take the tumor away. I just have to. No, I'm just saying, like, wouldn't that be crazy? Like, I've got I've got kitties. I love my kitties. Yeah, yeah, I had a cat too, and he decided to clock out a little early, but it's fine. It is what it is. Um, I'm doing pretty well. I would say it's all good.
SPEAKER_01Um, can you imagine?
SPEAKER_04You're like, I'm gonna love you so hard, your cancer is just gonna disappear.
SPEAKER_02No, I mean, like, when you think about it, you could love something hard enough for it to disappear. You could like that fly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like that fly. I love this fly so much, it's gonna fly away.
SPEAKER_02Man, that's brutal.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's actually crazy.
SPEAKER_02I'm trying to think, I feel like can't wait to reload. It hasn't been that last lot that long since we last recorded, and I am struggling to remember what I've been up to. It's been like a week. We record all the time now. I know.
SPEAKER_00Uh it's all good.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I feel like life has just been moving so fast pace, and I've been trying to stay in the moment, not really. I haven't really taken a minute to truly reflect on like what I've been up to. I've just been moving forward. That's fair. That's fair to me.
SPEAKER_07Same, same, same, same.
SPEAKER_02I do know this. I'm gonna go skateboard today. Wait, hell yeah. Um yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08Are you a long board?
SPEAKER_02Uh I have a board that is long, yes.
SPEAKER_04Should we should I should I, you know what? You know what?
SPEAKER_02Just okay.
SPEAKER_04For the joke.
SPEAKER_07No, I just think like you're on the West Coast. I feel like lawn boarding is very much a West Coast thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, I ride a popsicle board mostly, and then I have like a cruiser board that I might take out today because I don't feel like doing much tricks. But that's fair. I got I got I got this little mishap with my foot that makes me not be able to do as much as I want to right now, but yeah, that's called aging.
SPEAKER_01Well, part of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That is a factor likely.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, part of it. Like, you know, like a like a 90-10 split, right?
SPEAKER_07Like yeah, and for the for the for the listeners, every member of this podcast, including the like missing ones, remembers when um OL used to just send us discs.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, Pepper Farm remembers. Join us. Yeah, one of us.
SPEAKER_04Here, I'm gonna give you 700 hours of AOL on this disc. Yeah. Enjoy it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I have a tiny update um for those who give a shit. Spokane bur is like burning to the ground right now. Spokane, Washington, Eastern. Oh, really? It was uh it was an um a wild wildfire? It was a it wasn't a wildfire. Or was it arson? It was arson. It was started by some Twat Waffle, of course. Um and it's like burned a lot, and then a second fire has been started near Rainier, and I don't know much about that one. I don't know if it's arson, likely is because people like to do dumb shit to get attention. Yeah, um, but that sucks. So if anyone's crazy, it is crazy. Anyone listening that is from Spokane or know people in Spokane? I hope everyone is fine. Yeah, for sure. That shit sucks. Everybody be everybody. There's a tiny silver lining. The Smokey Hayes was making some really beautiful sunsets he's last time. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was my cousin's name.
SPEAKER_04Smokey Hayes.
SPEAKER_02Were they a stripper or uh that'd be a really cool like singer name?
SPEAKER_04Welcome to the stage, Smoky Hayes performance.
SPEAKER_01No, like a strict name. Like that's just a pretty solid.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's just a good name, period.
SPEAKER_04That's what they call me back in high school. But anyway, I'm glad. I'm glad that no big deal. Again, no, no news is good news, Grizz, right? You know, uh again, yeah. Just everybody dealing with the dealing with the fire in Washington, please be careful. Check on your neighbor. Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Whoever did it, or if you know the person who did it, you're an absolute fucking cunt.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you're a fuck cut fuckwad, you twat waffle. Yeah. So I did say twat waffle. Yeah, you did say twat waffle. I like it. I like it. That could be the word of the day.
SPEAKER_02Twat waffle is a great insult. Twat waffle is. Because what's it mean? I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Nobody knows, but it's provocative. And it gets the people.
SPEAKER_02It's a head turner, and that's all I care about.
SPEAKER_04It sure is. So, um, anyway, uh Templeton. What's up? Tell us what your pulse looks like. So we can wrap this up.
SPEAKER_07Somewhere in between Grizz and Me Seeks.
SPEAKER_04Huh. I don't gotta watch because I'm broke, but Okay, well if you had to guess.
SPEAKER_07We'll say like 71-ish.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so you're chilling. You're chillin'. There's nothing. Yeah. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. This is like pause. No, no, no. Wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on. It's okay.
SPEAKER_07Let it go. Let it go.
SPEAKER_04But nothing new, nothing, nothing to report on, Templeton.
SPEAKER_07Not really, man. I just been hanging out with my buddies.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And and working.
SPEAKER_04I gotcha. Well, again, sometimes. By the way, you guys are my buddies. Gotcha. Gotcha. So we're really uh so we're the buddies. We're the buddies in question. Alright. Well, I'm glad everybody's doing well. Yeti is obviously enjoying his time in Florida. So let's uh get into some entertainment. Horrible, horrible sunshine. Yeah, that horrible sunshine. That terrible good day.
SPEAKER_01Michael Ton said it perfectly when he was like, look, I'm so happy for you, but I'm also jealous.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And that's how I feel.
SPEAKER_04For sure. For sure. But it's all good. He,
Entertainment News And Zelda Casting
SPEAKER_04you know, everybody everybody gets to enjoy their time, you know. So entertainment news, if y'all are ready for it. I know I shared this with the group earlier, uh, I think this week or last week. But Sam Neil's final performance will be in the Legend of Zelda live adaptation. So that will be the last time we get to see Sam Neil do something new on the big screen. So I am pumped for the Legend of Zelda live adaptation. Yeah, I've been wanting that for like my entire adult life. I know. It's been it's been a long time coming, and I'm glad that they're finally getting to uh make that come to fruition. Um no word on his role in the project, so no, we don't know exactly what who he's playing or if he's just like lending his voice or what have you, but we'll see. Uh we'll see in the near future when more information is available.
Buc-ee’s Trademark Lawsuit Backlash
SPEAKER_04But this is the one thing I want to touch on because everybody's familiar with Buckey's, right? Oh yeah. And Buckeyes is creating quite a stir after they recently opened us opened their store in Hubert Heights, Ohio, because they filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Beaver's Minimart in Beaver Creek, Ohio. And apparently the suit claims the Mart's Beaver and red lettering will cause confusion to customers. So does Buckeys think we're that fucking dumb?
SPEAKER_01They think their demographic is dumb as a box of fucking rocks. Seriously. If you're not familiar with this, please go look up this Mart in Beaver Creek, Ohio, because nothing is similar. No, nothing is similar. Nobody's confusing these two. No.
SPEAKER_02You know what it like. They picked the wrong state to fuck with. You know what, you know what the likely reality of this is? It's not that they think that their customer their customers are stupid and it's money. It's probably not even that. It's control. They want to be known for being the beaver. They don't want any other business looking, but it's like, who was here first?
SPEAKER_04Beaver's Minimart in Beaver Creek, Ohio. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. And I think I think, if I'm not mistaken, I think Beaver's Minimart has been around longer than Bucky's period. So has ever been alive. So if we're going out careful. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02If if this Minimar gets the right attorney.
SPEAKER_04Right. Yeah, with the with enough money and the right attorney, they could absolutely blow Bucky's out of the water.
SPEAKER_02But I guess Bucky's is gonna have the money.
SPEAKER_04Correct, correct. Because obviously they're nationwide. And I guess um one of the uh I don't remember what his role is in Bucky's, but he came out and said something about the lawsuit saying that they're they're trying to say it's hurting us more than it's hurting them because they really don't want to like have the lawsuit or what have you, and it was it's not about money, it's about um they they they're essentially wanting beavers mini mart to agree to not go nationwide or like expand essentially. That's all yeah, that's all it comes to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they just want control, right?
SPEAKER_04They want control of it just like just like everything else in corporate America, which is which is kind of weird because they also went after this uh other mark called Teddy's, and and their mascot is not a beaver, but I I guess I gotta look more into that, but I guess they're saying that Teddies and Bucky's like are phonetically similar, and I'm like, I think you're a gas station that says sandwiches, I think that's stupid.
SPEAKER_01The only thing this makes me gonna do is boycott Buckies. I don't think it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04Because here's the thing, a lot of people are um kind of taking that route. Because yeah, we love buckies, we love their brisket and all that kind of stuff, but this is just bad taste, you know?
SPEAKER_07And and a lot of you I've never been to the buckies, and I'm not gonna go now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, a lot a lot of people like don't get me wrong, this does make me not want to go. Yeah, a lot of people a lot of people are uh taking the stance of we love buckys, we love what they offer, all that kind of stuff, their food, their their their just everything that they have available there. But because of their actions that they're taking, obviously they're gonna take a stand with Beavers Minimart and anybody that they go after, because at this point it's just corporate bullying, and you're just like, Yeah, you know, you obviously take a stand with the with the Minimart, but I think one of the funniest things was the fact that because I was curious, and this is what made me look into it, because say yes cakes, free plug. Shout out to them, shout out to them. Um, I I seen that they posted a uh they made like a story and they made a um they made they made a mascot with while uh utilizing AI and it was a beaver. So I was like, interesting. I I'm curious as to why they did that, and then I started looking more into it, like I didn't look into why they did it, but I started seeing more and more local businesses changing their to beavers because they're like they can't sue us all. So like I'm like, hey, that's actually yeah, no, that's actually kind of that's that's genius. Cause I'm like, I wish they wouldn't have used AI, but but there's a point to it, right? Like, I I get why they're doing it, and they wanted to do it quickly. So I mean, I'm all for me, for something like that, I'm all for it. You know what I mean? Like, like, because Bucky's, what are you doing? What are you doing? Like, what the fuck are you doing, man?
SPEAKER_02Like, lit literally how this lawsuit turns out, they're gonna lose business.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Because like sure, everybody was go ahead. Go ahead. Sorry.
SPEAKER_02People forget, people will forgive, and they'll probably come back from whatever hit they're gonna take from the people like us that are saying they're gonna stop going to Bucky's. Yeah. Fun fact, there's not a Bucky's close to me, so I don't I already don't go, but now I'm not gonna go out of my way to go. Yeah, and I've had their brisket sandwich before, and it is good, but like you ain't that good, honey. Like, you ain't that good. Basically, you're a fucking gas station out in the middle of nowhere's, you're not that good. You got popular because white people don't have taste.
SPEAKER_01I think the novelty of them will wear off anyway, and it'll end up becoming like a standard, danderd, like pilot type thing, just like a uh non-trucker pilot.
SPEAKER_04It's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like a flying jays.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. That's kind of what I'm gonna say is like bullying people about it. It's just so disgusting.
SPEAKER_07Like everybody was like super psyched when like a Buckeys came to town. I didn't really care because I didn't know the fuck about what Buckies was, and I'm not gonna drive 30 minutes to go to a goddamn gas station. Um waste gas, but but now I'm definitely not gonna go. Fuck them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, do you know how much I've avoided Target? I'm like a hundred percent like I can buckle down. There's other places I can go.
SPEAKER_02Right, and like shop local.
SPEAKER_01Unless I am on E and I have to go to a Bucky's, like I could very easily avoid it. And I probably will. Like, I agree.
SPEAKER_02For sure. If if the only gas station nearby is a Bucky's and I'm on E, guess what? You're gonna push.
SPEAKER_04I will say that they pick the weirdest spots to put Bucky's in, like in the in the most like middle of nowhere.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like exactly. I've always wondered about that. It it's gotta be strategic. It's it's gotta be about money. It's probably location is really affordable. The taxes are probably non-existent, and they probably get some sort of like local government incentives to put one there. Oh, I'm sure they do the city, the city or town or whatever knows that they're gonna draw people in.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, because I was wondering.
SPEAKER_07Like, it's always in the most like random, like out-of-the-way places that they put them.
SPEAKER_04Almost like remote locations where they're like, Yeah, this is if I had to guess, like what follow to Grizz's point, it probably does have something to do with like um property taxes, government incentives.
SPEAKER_01Also, when you think about the strategy of what Bucky's is, it's a restaurant, yeah, it's a store, it's a gas station, a gas station, and when you go to these rural places, they don't have these, so it's not just dependent on the traveler population. Guarantee you they pull from local population to do their regular grocery shopping because they offer a lot, it's clothing, like everyone.
SPEAKER_02It's kind of it's kind of like a Walmart net kind of sort of net like a it's like Walmart mixed with like a 7-Eleven, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And and honestly, because because I'm I'm willing to bet they insert these buckies and then try to build around it, you know what I mean? Like create create that community because now it's bringing people to be.
SPEAKER_07We've got a buckies and a Walmart.
SPEAKER_04We're good, yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's like I don't know. That's a midwestern dream. Yeah, no shit. Bucky's and a Walmart? Oh my god, my cup runneth over. Like, easy, easy there, child. Like it it ain't it ain't that deep.
SPEAKER_01That's why they wouldn't succeed in the West Coast. I'm telling you, in like more liberal states, more liberal.
SPEAKER_02That's probably why they're not near me.
SPEAKER_01Yep. I swear.
SPEAKER_02Seattle, Seattle, uh, aside from like the straight up downtown area that I live in, because like a lot of these people don't care that much, but like when you get into like the neighborhoods, a lot of people intentionally shop locally. And a lot of the breweries around here are like so about being an independent thing that they don't even distribute their beer. You gotta like go to the brewery to pick up their beer. They'll they don't even put it in grocery stores. Oh wow, the bigger ones, the bigger ones do, right? Like, there's some bigger independents, you know. Like for those in Cincinnati listening, like the Rhein Geis of the area or the Mad Trees of the area, yeah. They're they're in the Fred Myers and the grocery stores around here, but like the micro brews, you know, like like a 50 West or somewhere a little smaller, maybe, uh, they they're they're like, you gotta come get our shit. Yeah, and I respect it.
SPEAKER_04For sure, yeah. Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_02Because that's uh it creates it creates community, right? Like if you're if you're a micro anything, any type of business, if you invest in your local community and like put on events, do things for the you know, like fucking volunteer programming and like just doing stuff to like better where you're at, people are gonna love you for that.
SPEAKER_08For sure.
SPEAKER_02If you go around bullying other companies because they have a fucking beaver as their logo, and you got an ego bruise because you probably didn't get loved enough as a child. I don't know. Not bad. I went in a little bit.
SPEAKER_04It's like I'd say you have deeper issues, my friend. Uh, that's that's that's what it sounds like. So Buckies, come up off of it. It'll be okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, show the fuck out.
SPEAKER_04It'll literally be okay. Like, nobody it seriously, like, what the fuck are you doing? So, anyway, do with that news what you will. Um, you know, beavers, minimum, stand strong, y'all. Take it, take the fight to the big man. You know what I'm saying? Fuck, fuck you, buckies. Fuck the man. You son of a bitch. And I like their over bites and everything. God damn it. Now I gotta be mad at a place I kind of like, and that sucks. It truly does. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02They'll either they'll either um have a redemption arc or they won't.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's what it's gonna come down to. Either they're gonna either this is the beginning of their villain arc, or they will have a redemption arc. Yeah, this is so we'll see. That is yet to be known. So anyway. That's it. That's the fork in the row that they're at right now. Choose wisely, Buckies. So, anyway, um, since Yeti's not here, uh, he doesn't have anything to ask us, but we do have a Reddit roulette
Reddit Roulette Wedding Dilemma
SPEAKER_04to do. So, I have Reddit pulled up. And in great Yeti spirit, because he's hating Florida weather so much. I need a number between one and let's just do three. One and three. Anybody got numbers? One. Oh, okay. Well, here we go. One round of applause.
SPEAKER_00Yay.
SPEAKER_04Okay, let's see here. Uh, am I the asshole for wanting to attend a child-free wedding without my wife?
SPEAKER_00Huh? What?
SPEAKER_01Damn, he wants to be single single. Yeah, let's uh I'm glad I waited until you stopped talking.
SPEAKER_02Let's yeah, let's I was like, nah, you're not an asshole for a child free wedding.
SPEAKER_04Obviously. Without your significant other. So let's dive in and find out for sure, shall we? So here we go. OP posts. My cousin is getting married, and the wedding is a four-hour flight from where I live. We aren't particularly close, but I would really like to be there for my member, uh, for my family member on the day of their wedding. It is a child-free wedding, and we have two children. One is under one year uh one year old and the other almost five. My wife refuses to travel and get a babysitter. She is even refusing to let me hire a babysitter to help out uh at the house for the two days I'm gone. She says she cannot take care of the kids by herself, and everything will fall apart and she'll be underwater. She was invited to a few weddings earlier this year, also child-free, and not only did I encourage her to go, I reassured her I can watch both kids for as long as she needs to travel and come back. She declined to go to any of those weddings and was offended they were child-free. I told her it's important to me to go, and I feel heartbroken that I have a partner who won't uh do for me what I would do for them. I am considering buying the plane ticket and RSVPing yes and going anyway. The clock is ticking to RSVP and I want to be there. I feel resentful that my wife can't, well, buy a parent to our two kids for two days and by by herself uh and refuses to entertain my hiring a babysitter for as much as possible time to shadow and help her with the kids. When I told her how I felt about this, she said, Do you think this is going to make me change my mind? I don't want you to go. She has ADHD and executive function issues, and even making
Reading The Post And Key Details
SPEAKER_04breakfast can feel overwhelming for her. Am I the asshole for attending? Oh no. Am I the asshole for intending to go to this wedding?
SPEAKER_07I would like to hear from me six first.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Before I go in on this, I want to acknowledge postpartum and struggles with motherhood. And I I hear that. But secondary to that, what is wrong with this woman? Like, because here's the thing child free number one, I'll have you, I'll walk through my thought process. You said, Am I the asshole for wanting to attend my cousin's what like child-free wedding? Immediately I kind of understood because also, like going through life, I have a few cousins that I'm very connected to. And like I would want to go experience their wedding with and really focus on them. Like that would be so important to me. And spending time with my family, and like you have the the two kids at home, that's almost like, hey, I this is important to me as my spouse. I want you to understand that this is what I'm missing. And then he offers the these nanny solutions, these babysitter solutions, which could alleviate some of her fears about parenting and doing all of that. And it feels like I would not consider him the asshole. Everything he said is super valid. And I think that the wife is maybe in need of maybe some medical attention. Uh, and I don't say that to be funny or facetious. Um, I say that because it's deeply impacting her relationship and her marriage, because she's unwilling uh to take some very reasonable solutions.
SPEAKER_04No, that's I wouldn't I wouldn't call him an asshole. Yeah, that's fair. Because he, you know, he offers to get the babysitter just a shadow. You know what I mean? Like just to be there to help so that way she doesn't feel overwhelmed at the same time. Because I mean, you're a parent, I am not. I don't know, you know what I mean? Like, I don't know the struggles of trying to keep up with a child by yourself. Like, that's just not part of my daily routine. I can just imagine, though, having dealt with, you know, my nephew, your son. I I I get that, you know, children can be a handful, and doing it by yourself, especially if like you said, you're not being mean when you say you you may want to, you know, seek some counsel if you are struggling this bad, you know, with simple day-to-day tasks. You know, if he's talking about she's making breakfast and having a hard time.
SPEAKER_07Right, like I can't help you, but somebody can.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so like yeah, yeah, yeah. Like so you there's somebody, there are people out there, paid professionals, that can, you know, get down to the bottom of what's going on. And and once you get there, you know, you can absolutely start to you know work on getting better at that. You know, whatever whatever, whatever that you gotta do to get to the road of not being super overwhelmed. Grizz, you got anything you want to add?
SPEAKER_02Uh so my initial thought while I was listening to listening to you read it, it felt like I the feelings that I was experiencing was I was disagreeing with what he was saying. Um like I understand like wanting, like offering solutions. It's like he was saying the right things, but for some reason when I was hearing it, it felt like maybe he's not delivering it in like the correct way. Like maybe she's not able to receive it, because then you know he's using language like I'm be you know, becoming resentful. I'm I may even go regardless. And it's like, okay, if you truly love this person, that's disrespectful to just do something against their wishes. Um and there has to be a compromise, I think, when in a situation like this. Uh potential solution that I could see is maybe you bring the whole family, the kids, the wife, yourself, you go to the city or town where the wedding is attending, and then maybe um leave the kids behind. You know, like wife can watch the kids from like a hotel room, and then you're nearby if there's an emergency. Like maybe the distance is freaking her out. I don't know. There's not like it doesn't seem like they're willing to communicate in a resolving, repairing way. It's uh well, this is what I want to do, right? Well, this is what I want to do. Yeah, and you know, you know that I can't do it because of X, Y, and Z. And well, why can't you do it? Because uh I here's these solutions I have, and it's like I hear it seems like they're both kind of like just thinking about themselves instead of thinking about the whole picture. I could be oh way over reading that. I mean, I mean I
SPEAKER_04At this point, it is up for interpretation on what both are thinking at at the time.
SPEAKER_02So my initial gut reaction was he is an asshole, but I don't think he's like an asshole asshole. I think he's just being inconsiderate and a little selfish. He even said he doesn't even know that cousin. So it's like, why is that a big fucking deal?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he did mention they're not they're not close. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I understand wanting to be there for like a family member or whatever, but like, do you just want to do you just want to get away from your family for a minute? Or I was I was literally care. Yeah, I was gonna say it could be that's that's what I felt when I was hearing you read it.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um but he was saying all the right things to to Musique's point. Like he it and and it does sound like the
Postpartum Anxiety And Partner Support
SPEAKER_02wife could probably benefit from some therapy um or or something, because like you gotta be you should be like if you're taking care of some children, you gotta be able to take care of them. I have had the privilege of being a temporary parent for a five-year-old six and then you she aged from five, six, and seven. So I I I know with like a very small snapshot of what it is required to take care of a child, I can't say I know what it's like to be a parent, because that doesn't I don't think that's the same as what I did, right? But I do I do understand what it requires to have responsibility over another human life, and it is challenging. And you know, when I was I wasn't doing it alone. My my ex and I did that, uh, but there were times when I was alone and was the sole take caretaker and like had to, you know, like just do shit, you know, like feed her or like take her to the park or take her to a thing, you know what I mean? Just like putting her in a car seat, doing all the things you do. So I understand how challenging it is. Um it just requires a massive amount of patience, yeah, and a massive amount of understanding, and you it's really perspective, and and that's an I know that that's coming from an extremely mature mindset at the moment, and some people just don't have that capacity or bandwidth, and that's okay, but you have to acknowledge that.
SPEAKER_04I agree, I agree.
SPEAKER_01Like it's hard to consider him an asshole in this space, yeah. And like I like I completely agree with you, and like when I zoom out, I had postpartum OCD and postpartum anxiety, and I fell down the stairs with my son because I and I was so insistent because I was so insistent on taking care of everything by myself, and like I was keeping everything so close to the test, but I wasn't functioning and I wasn't really caring for my child. When you actually like zoom out and think about it, I sought therapy, they provided solutions on like you have to get to sleep, you have to rely on your village, like and relieve stress to that. So I consider that from that perspective, that like it sounds like she needs help, she needs some type of help to be able to function enough to be an effective parent and to show up as a parent. And to you, and I also understand on the other side of things, I okay what was it six weeks after my son was born. My Thompsy and Emily are Yeti and and Mama Yeti were getting married in Vegas.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I had to leave my son and my child. Um, and he was six weeks old. But I'm gonna tell you, I had a glimmer of like oh hell yeah. I I wanted to be there with my kid, sure. But like also the the idea of going and getting away, the novelty of that, I would have done anything. I would have probably manipulated you into anything. So like so genuinely, like I can see both sides like an asshole seems like a very big term. Like to me, assholes almost like intentional, like you're really missing a lot of things, but like it's a complicated situation over in that household, sounds like yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I agree with me seeks. I do not think he's an asshole, but I do think that they are disconnected.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they're definitely lines, yeah. They're treating it like it's more of an impasse, you know what I mean, instead of instead of trying to comp find it find a legitimate compromise somewhere. Um, and maybe one person is more unwilling to budge than the other, but I don't know. You know what I mean? I I it I mean, it sounds like this guy's over here, like to Grizz's point, he's saying that he's you know becoming resentful and all that kind of stuff, and that just seems like that's big language. Yeah, it seems like he's creating animosity out of whatever this might be, and instead of just being, you know, sitting down and trying to understand where she's coming from and all that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, so I gotta zoom out there too, and I know I'm not going like all of that, but like I can imagine this might be like another thing, and I can again zoom out, and this is in in hindsight too. Like, I think about my marriage and like my mental health after having a child and not getting help and not getting that. My husband probably was growing resentful because he could see that there was something wrong, and he's like, I don't know how to help you. And it's like, and also I don't think he was super interested in helping me. So I think that that is a the lens too. But like, I can understand how you could grow to resentment if you aren't willing to like truly help the problem. Like to your point, like the nanny is not the solution.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01It's not mental health, right? And like trying to understand how you alleviate this stressor and holistically heal your spouse, and you should want that for them. But I can understand if he doesn't have those tools, how he would get to get to resentment in these what we see as a micro moment.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_01What we see is this like little, okay, yes, it's crazy that you'd be resentful over this, but it's a series of micro moments. Like, I get it, they need some counseling. You're not an asshole, but like you should go seek some help.
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't think um his resentment is too too wildly crazy. Uh I think it's I think it's inappropriate um in a way. Um, however, comma, I agree with what you said. Like, if their relationship is on the rocks, everything he's saying makes total sense. But um a thought I had a moment ago while you were talking is why don't they just leave the children with the grandparents? Now, maybe they don't exist. Uh I I know. I don't have support system. I don't know, yeah, yeah. Maybe their support system is just the two of them, but um, that could be a potential solution. And it doesn't, I feel like if it was a potential solution, it would have probably been mentioned. Maybe that's why they thought to for nanny or whatever, but yeah, you'd think so. You would think that's a tough that's a tough problem to solve because I feel like personally, um there's not a cousin in my family that I would be willing to give up a relationship with the person that I've had two children with if I was in love with them. Right. To go to go.
SPEAKER_01That second part is so heavy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. And and and and you know, people who are in relationships aren't able to always identify if they're actually in love or not. Right. Because most people aren't I think well, maybe that was a generalization I was about to start. I suffer from not always allowing myself to feel my emotions. I will compartmentalize them. So I understand not being able to feel your feelings, and maybe that's the case.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it could be. I mean, I think I think a lot of commenters are kind of feeling the same way because we're gonna we're gonna read some of these. Oh yeah. One commenter says she was overwhelmed by making breakfast but has two young kids. She needs help from a child care provider and therapist. Um got one here. It says, uh, what does she do when when you go to work? How does she handle having the kids? Was she like this when you had just the one child? Uh she seriously she seriously needs therapy, especially as she's never left to go to any events on her own either.
SPEAKER_02Um she could be um uh introverted.
SPEAKER_04She could be. Right. That that that could very that could very well be. I might play it, play a hand in it.
SPEAKER_07We don't know how she was beforehand. I'm very, very introverted. Like I like my people in my space, but like when it comes to like people that don't know, I I don't like that. Right at all.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and there are a lot of there are a lot of people that are like that. So is it something that she was you know that was part of her personality before? We don't know. Obviously, that's information that's not given. Um this person says soft, not the asshole. Uh has she been screened for postpartum depression, or has she always been like that? Do you have trusted babysitters or childcare, or would this just be a random you find just be a random you find to watch two small kids for a few days? My husband and I both solo parent often, but I wouldn't leave my two toddlers with a random sitter for days while I was out of state.
Edits Updates And Validation Spiral
SPEAKER_04So that's true. Yeah, there's yeah, there's yeah, there's there's a lot that that obviously is missing as far as information goes, but there's a few edits. Uh this edit says wife is still pumping for the baby, our only reliable baby sitters, her parents, have already booked a trip out of town that weekend. So the parents are busy. Um second edit says, for those saying she should see a therapist, she was she was before the second baby was born. It did not seem like her condition was improving. She refuses to consider medication either since the baby was born. She says she cannot see a therapist because she doesn't have time. And then the last edit we have here says, I keep seeing this come up. I'm not going to get drunk, in quotes. It's not about that for me. My family's very is very apart, and it's a one in a decade or more opportunity to have everyone in one place together. I'm not sure how I'm abandoning as my wife is invited to. She says she doesn't want to go, and I've also offered to do everything possible to get hired help. We have babysitters we've used in the past that are trusted and might be available. She assumes they are not or won't be available at the hours when the help is most needed. Yes, Grizz.
SPEAKER_02I don't like how he said hired help, and then the second way he said help is needed. Didn't like that.
SPEAKER_04He said hired help. That's weird. Yes, Miss Mises.
SPEAKER_01Okay, this might be a bit of a hot take. But I actually, as we're going through this, I don't like the am I the asshole questions because typically these are just frames and like I'm listening to the defenses back. They already believe they're not the asshole. They already believe they're right and they're just looking for it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I'm just like, I hate these questions because you already believe you're not the asshole and you're ready to defend it. You're probably with your partner saying, look, they're saying I'm not the asshole. And somehow, like this guy, the more I'm actually thinking about it, maybe he is an asshole. Because he's probably like, look, he does seem like an asshole. Because I'm thinking I've been in a marriage like this, where like he's probably like, look, they think you're crazy too. Damn, they think you're crazy too. And using it to come to the table, like when I think about it, it just all feels like a manipulation.
SPEAKER_07Everybody who puts them in the last she was acting bitchy, so I called her a bitch.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, keep it, keep in mind, they're going to my fault. They're going to Reddit and asking many, many, many, many strangers on the internet what they think about the situation.
SPEAKER_02I'll never understand that. So Reddit is like a beautiful, weird anomaly.
SPEAKER_04It it honestly is. It is. And I think I think most Reddit stories or questions that are asked always should be taken with a grain of salt. Because number one, they could be made up fucking, you know, making shit up. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02By just practicing their storytelling.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. And you know what's funny? Because I always uh I don't know if you guys have heard of Smosh, but I watch I watch that channel a lot, and they do a lot of Am I the Assholes? And there was one that they read where the person wrote something that was like really intricate, and a lot of people were saying, like, asshole, asshole, asshole. They came back years later and said, Yeah, I was I just wrote that for my journalism class and was just making shit so I'm like, it's possible people are just you know working on storytelling and just putting it out into the into the wild.
SPEAKER_01Also plot twist, this dude's like divorced already, and he's just going through the scenarios that were like major in his marriage, and he's like, I want to see if I'm so here.
SPEAKER_02All right. We got even even more maliciously, uh, or sadistically rather, um, they they'll they'll do this, they'll they'll have their horrible story, and then when everyone's leaning into them, they'll they'll be like, Oh, that was just fake, guys.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was made up. I was totally joking. I was kidding. I was merely acting. I was merely acting. I was merely acting up. Okay, so we do have an update uh since they since the last post. Uh says she spoke to her sister and is going to reach out to a trusted babysitter today and said she would feel comfortable if she has a combination of help from both of them. She said she let me know today if she can secure coverage. I told her I won't go unless she feels supported enough in my absence. I also spoke to her about how she was feeling uh postpartum. She told me she's not depressed, but she feels postpartum anxiety. I told her I would do whatever it takes to facilitate her being able to speak to someone to work through her struggles. She said she is unwilling to take medication and there is no time for her to have an appointment. I told her I would take time off work if necessary so she could speak with a professional. So do we feel like he's taking appropriate steps? Do we feel like, like, what are we thinking here?
SPEAKER_02I still want to hate him, is the problem. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm so much with this particular situation, because like I also refuse to take medication, and now I'm on three, and I'm like, actually, this is not a little part of me wants to like shake her a little bit, like, bro, take the medication. Take the meds, take the meds. Every little part of me wants that, but also like, bro, stop involving us, uninvolve us, please.
SPEAKER_04No, like legitimately at that point, like that needs to be between you and stop airing your shit out on the internet. Reddit should not be a place for that. We want MID assholes of like, because my dog is taking my husband. You remember that story? That was fun. Because so, so fun fact, fun fact. I was at another shameless plug, I was at Say S Cakes, and she said she started listening to the to the show, and she she was listening to that episode, and she was absolutely like furious. She was like, That girl was trying to blah blah blah blah blah. He was a and then you said she's a pit bull, and I was like, This motherfucker. This motherfucker. I was like, I said it was gonna be, it was a weird one, it was just funny, it was just a fun one, but you know, it happens. So I liked it. It was good, yeah. It was it was funny. So yeah, at this point, just stop involving us. Like at that point, you two need to handle your business and get us out of your your affairs.
SPEAKER_01I don't care if he goes to the wedding or not at this point. I do not care when involve me. Because after that many updates, like, stop it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Also, I got these slippers that are pumpkin spice lattes. Where did you get those from?
SPEAKER_04Starbus.
SPEAKER_01I got them from homebuys.
SPEAKER_04Home buys, Starbucks.
SPEAKER_02So your feet can your feet can just be pumpkin spice. Pumpkin spice all day. Wait, hold on, hold on, hold on. Important question. Do they smell like pumpkin spice? No. That's the that's the lost um spice girl.
SPEAKER_01No, they don't smell like any pumpkin. Pumpkin spice.
SPEAKER_02Like essential oils. Yeah, and just drip them in there.
SPEAKER_01That's smart. Doing that as soon as we're done. Amazon will be on its way.
SPEAKER_04And then next thing you know, she's gonna have like ants and stuff all crawling all in her slippers. Where are these ants coming from? Probably the shit you sprayed in it. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I couldn't find any essential oils, so I just poured pumpkin spice latte on it.
SPEAKER_01I just poured the syrup just straight on them, bad boys.
SPEAKER_04Oh, wow, that would actually be hilarious. So, anyway, uh let us know what you think about that story. Do you do you agree? Is he an asshole? Is he not the asshole? Do you care at this point, especially with as many updates as we had? A little bit, but not all the way. That's fair. That's fair.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I think my final verdict is he's an asshole for making us talk about it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, for making us be a part of his family, his family issues. Yeah, you're the asshole for that. Let's let's let's go with that. Am I the asshole for involving the internet in something I should be handling with my wife? Yeah, probably. Correct. Yes, exactly. Yeah, probably. Your conversations are right. Uh that I mean, obviously, they've been talking about it. He's just coming to the internet for probably like this validation. Like something to me. Yeah, like that's probably all that's happening.
SPEAKER_01So then he's CYN by being like, I was a supportive husband for everybody who says I wasn't. Yep. I was a supportive husband.
SPEAKER_04Yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01Shut up.
SPEAKER_04Shut up, Meg. Shut up, Meg. Shut up, Meg. Anyway, anyways. Um, we do have a topic to get into. Before that, before that. Before that, I have a question for all of you.

SPEAKER_07So with that being said, what are you saying, Templeton? I was gonna say also tell Grizz what like sunshine is like.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, cuz because apparently Seattle doesn't get sunshine. So with that being said.
First Reactions To The Odyssey
SPEAKER_04It's gorgeous. It's gorgeous. I think we have something to talk uh talk about today, and I think we are talking about Christopher Nolan's Odyssey. Am I wrong? It sounds epic. Oh I see what you did there, Miss Mese. It sounds epic. So uh I think one of the greatest things about uh the Odyssey so far is the fact that Yeti went to go see it before before I did, before me and Miss Meseeks did. And it was really funny because uh it was like the Friday it came out, we uh he got dropped off, I had to go pick him up. Yeah, the moment I picked him up, he was like, Bro. Say, yeah, how'd you how'd you like it? He was like, It was really good, but I know a lot of that story. I was like, well, I hope you would, because I think we all read it in high school. I think we're all made to read it in high school. I hope you know the story of you know Odysseus and and and the whole Odyssey story. And he was like, Who said it was really cool, like knowing what was. I was like, Yeah, it's it's really neat, like knowing the source material and going into something like that adapts it. And then you can kind of like see their interpretation, see the changes and whatnot, and you can kind of make your you can kind of judge that, you know, judge their interpretation of it. Now, from my understanding, Christopher Nolan utilized um I forget her name, Emily something. It was her um it was her rendition of it that he was he said he was heavily inspired by. She actually translated Homer's original Odyssey into her version of the story. So she had a lot to say uh about it. Ultimately, I think she was I think as far as an adaptation goes, obviously because she was the writer of the source material, she wasn't super thrilled about some of the changes that were made. But overall, she I think she understood that it is a different medium that is it's being shown in. So, you know, uh I I always say a book has time to spend a lot of time on certain characters and storylines and all that kind of stuff. He's stuffing it all into three hours of a film. That's a lot to do, it's a lot to cover, and and three hours, yeah, it seems like a lot to sit through, but honestly, to fully translate it from book to live adaptation, it'd be like a week-long movie. So, you know, you kind of have to give a little bit of grace and understand that what the the creative uh uh differences start to start to lie. So, how did everybody like the Odyssey?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I have got to say what I wrote down.
SPEAKER_04Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_01The very first point said I really I only remember the epic by watching it. I had the same exact experience yeti then. I have not thought about Homer's The Odyssey since sophomore year in college and then or in high school, and that has been 20 plus years ago. Okay. And I'm watching it and I'm like, this looks so familiar. I'm gonna remember that. Like that was my very first thing. So, like, me and Yeti are on the same page about that. No, that's fair.
SPEAKER_04That's fair because it is something, like you said, it's 20 plus years ago. It's not something that you absolutely think about, unless that's your jam and you're into that kind of stuff. You're not I don't know a lot of people, especially in my circles, that just sit down and say, hey, I'm gonna pick up the Odyssey for the 15th time this week, and uh, I'm gonna I'm gonna enjoy that read again. Okay, cool. Like I I I'm not I don't judge anybody that does. I'm just saying I don't know anybody that does that. So, you know what I mean? So it's like it is it's something you don't think about. So to watch it and it just all kind of come flooding back to you, I get that. Trust me, I do. So who wants to go next? Who likes who liked the Odyssey? What you got?
SPEAKER_02I'll I'll throw down. Um throw it out. So I was talking about this with a friend of mine uh be I think before or after, well, before and after the movie. Um I wasn't sure if I had read it because I don't remember it, right? And and I was like, I'm sure we did. If everyone has to do it in high school, I'm sure I did, but I do my memory of high school was I didn't like doing things that felt like work.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so, like when it came to like projects like that, like studying things, I would always like take the easy way out or like find shortcuts or just like cram. So, like a lot of things I don't remember because I was just cramming it and it didn't stick.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02Um, which sucks because like now I appreciate things in a different lens and I actually like to learn now. I think whatever, that's a that's a me problem. But um after watching the movie, I've like each fucking scene, I was like, Oh, oh yeah, I know this. Oh, oh memory unlocked. So it sounds like what was funny is I thought like there was so many parts of this movie where I thought that they were different stories. Nope. You know what I'm saying? Like they like I didn't realize uh Odysseus was the through line. Uh so like that was that was pretty cool. And like the whole like going off and then coming back thing. I was like at a certain point, I was like, I know exactly how this fucking movie ends. Yeah, like at a certain point it all clicked back together, and I was like, Yeah, oh, I do know this.
SPEAKER_04I do know this story.
SPEAKER_02That was funny, that was funny to me. Uh a little side note, I kind of want to read it. I want to read the Odyssey which which I don't know which one I would read if I would like go with the you know the the the Homer one or like a rewritten one. Um because I'm so I'm reading a book right now called Art of Racing in the Rain. And since everyone knows my dog has cancer, this book the dog doesn't have cancer in the book, but the dog the book is told from a dog's perspective and it's narrated by a dog. Oh, okay. And um that's cool, it also takes place in Seattle, which I don't know why I never thought about that. The future because this is like my third time physically read or second time physically reading it, and like there's a movie, I've seen the movie a couple times, I've listened to it on audiobook a few times, and I don't know why. Probably because I wasn't living in Seattle in those times, but now that I live here and like when they're talking about um like neighborhoods and shit, I'm I know exactly where they are because like I've I've like been by them now. Uh so like it's it's a different connected read. I digress. I've been enjoying reading so much that I think that there's enough momentum that I think I could read the Odyssey. That's fair. That's all I was trying to say.
SPEAKER_04No, that's fair, that's fair, because honestly, I've I've recently just kind of jumped back on the bandwagon of reading. I I started with a smaller book, uh Quantum Quantum Bullshit is the first one I read. And then the second one I'm reading, it's the Code Breaker, I believe. It's basically about uh Jennifer Downa and and she's the creator of CRISPR, which that's a whole another conversation in itself. Um But uh I I think I think I'm kind of with you right now, Grizz. I think I do want to revisit the Odyssey and and see if I have the same because like you said, in school it it feels like a chore, right? Like they told you to do it, you gotta do it, you gotta write a review, or whatever the whatever the uh uh the assignment was at the time. So now it's like I have free will and I just want to read the book because I can, right? Like that's that's kind of where I'm at, because I'm like, you know, honestly, especially hearing that she had a lot to say about it, because she said she felt like she needed to say something about it, right? Because it it it was her work that inspired him, so she kind of felt an obligation, I guess, to actually review the movie. And I'm like, you know, I I think I'm gonna decide which one I want to read and then pick it up somewhere. I'm I'm I'm gonna stop by probably I don't know, Barnes and Noble or half-priced books. I forget, I always forget they exist. That's a good spot. I forget they exist. That's a good spot. Yeah, so I might stop by there and see what they have, see what they have to offer and see what you know is available and decide what I'm gonna pick up because it is an epic tale to read about, you know, but to be fair, that's exactly what it is, is a tale, and that will have something to do. Yeah, that will have something to do with our conversation a little later on. But I do want to see if Templeton. Did you were were you able to go see the Odyssey?
SPEAKER_07I was not.
SPEAKER_04Do you remember reading?
SPEAKER_01Remember it from high school?
SPEAKER_07I mean, I saw the original, yes, like a long time ago.
SPEAKER_02I would be interested in watching the old one. The one that they would show us in school, like on the fucking Rolly TV.
SPEAKER_04Yep. Roll that TV in, and you already know. Ah, we ain't doing shit today.
SPEAKER_02Teachers hung over. Yeah, we ain't doing shit today.
SPEAKER_04Now, now a big part now, a big part problem for me, part of that, was whenever we did that. Guess what I would be doing? Sketching in my agenda about something.
SPEAKER_02My head would be down on that table.
SPEAKER_04I'd be I'd be sketching about something.
SPEAKER_07I was I I was watching that shit. Like I wanted to watch. Yeah. Yeah. See, we all had different things.
SPEAKER_02It depended. It depended on where what it depended on what class, like what period it was. If it was an early period, your boy was sleeping. That's fair. If it was after lunch, I was probably with Jay sketching.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It was either sleeping or sketching.
SPEAKER_04It was it was the only time I got to like, you know, work on my stupid comic that I made. When I say stupid, I mean like funny-wise. Anyway, again, whole nother conversation. Um, so let's dive in to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Because what an epic that that was. A lot of uh I seen a lot of reviews say that it didn't feel like three hours, like it was three hours, obviously, but it didn't feel like three hours. You definitely felt like the you you could tell was the epic, it was action, like non-stop. There was always something going on, super engaging.
SPEAKER_07Well, that that's how you know it's a good movie, like if it doesn't feel like it's long.
SPEAKER_04It was good, it was great storytelling, honestly, is what Christopher Nolan was ca was capable of doing. And I think I think where we should start is the fact that I know Grizz, we mentioned it, I think the other episode, maybe two episodes ago, about uh Christopher Nolan's
Practical Effects And IMAX Craft
SPEAKER_04use of practical effects. Yeah. Made that made just elevated that movie.
SPEAKER_02Elevated it. 100%. Like when I found out that the Cyclops was a puppet, it was actually there. Yeah. I was like, oh shit. Yeah. Also, side side note, side note. All I'm looking for in life, I just want to live that cyclops life.
SPEAKER_04Bro.
SPEAKER_02I just want to take care of some sheep, some goats, I mean, make some goat milk, live in a little cave, have a dude. Waterfront was his porch. Right. Bro, my guy was living the life, and then and then this little asshole comes up and takes the only eye he has. Dick. This little asshole. My favorite part. My favorite part is when the cyclops starts talking and they're like, he could talk?
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_02This whole time. He goes, he goes, Would you talk to an ant?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Now I know I know what Miss Mesek is gonna say, but I I want her to give us give us how you felt about the cyclops scene.
SPEAKER_01The cyclops scene had me geeking the whole time. The whole time. Because number one, I wasn't prepared. To your point, like you read it and you visualize what a cyclops would look like in your mind. And like the fact that it was just like a sideways face was so awesome. To see the face, I giggled. Like every moment I just kept giggling. And but then when he stabbed him in the eye, dude was just sleeping and then boom, stick to the eye. How awful! Like, so then at a point it felt bad for him because he's sitting there crying to the side and because he's like, I'm just living this life, right? Chilling with my pet. It's like somebody sitting here terrorizing me.
SPEAKER_02Can you imagine the bomb as ghost uh cheese on the planet?
SPEAKER_04Can you imagine? Can you imagine? You're sleeping, you're sleeping and somebody goes, hey, and you just wake up and just right in the back.
SPEAKER_01Like the side box is never like I hate how they phrase this because like it wasn't the sidebox was never there. Like you bullied this man. You can you broken you you broken his house.
SPEAKER_04Beanie, you broke his house. You ate his food.
SPEAKER_07Bullied his cheese. You ate his food. And it's poked him in the goddamn in the eye.
SPEAKER_01Poked him in the eye. Like, what the fuck, bro? And then when he's chasing you out of his residence. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He didn't have to fire that arrow. He didn't have to fire that arrow. He did not have to do that. That was so extra, though. That was so fucking extra. I was like, bro, you're already out. Just keep moving.
SPEAKER_01Like, I can understand at some point people were so over Odysseus. They were like, bro, can you not?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like, I can understand at some point, but he was so caught up in his own. Yeah, he wasn't he didn't look at the effects of it on other people. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Lost in the sauce. That's that's lost in the sauce.
SPEAKER_04That's what it was giving. So that was.
SPEAKER_02Because, like, dude, just I mean it said, I'm gonna go get milk and cigarettes.
SPEAKER_04I'll be right back. He's not he's not coming back. He's not coming back.
SPEAKER_03That's actually crazy.
SPEAKER_04Mama, where's Daddy? No, but I will say, like, to Miss Mesek's point, when you're when when she mentioned when you're reading the book, you get you visualize what the cyclops looks like, right? And typically, when people when anybody does some kind of rendition of a cyclops, it's usually is pretty similar to the next. Like you have a the normal face, the one eye with the lids, you know, the eyelids are closing this way. What an interesting way to just have a normal have a normal like person, right? Like a just a giant. Like he's he's he was essentially a giant, but just turn his face, like just contorted his face to where his eyes up here. I was like, that is so interesting. What an interesting way to portray a cyclops. Like his face is twisted. Because now I'm like, who did that to your face? Were you born this way?
SPEAKER_02Or was like somebody just like or wasn't he created by Zeus or Poseidon?
SPEAKER_04He was he was he was uh Poseidon. Yeah, he was Poseidon's kid. I don't know if he was naturally made, or if like you know what I mean? Like if he was yeah, seaweed, it's just like whatever, yeah, or if he was like, you know, molded, like with what the witch did to all of Odysseus' homeboys when they're like, You are you hungry?
SPEAKER_02Would you like that scene, that whole sequence of events, loved it. Yeah, when she turned them into pigs, I was like, the greatest metaphor in the history of cinema. Yep. It was in her pigs. That was it was great.
SPEAKER_01There was really an ode to the masa to the yeah, yeah. No, no, no.
SPEAKER_02I didn't do any I didn't do anything to them. I just I just yeah, this is their this is their true form.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, this is their true this is who they truly are. Yeah, it's who they truly are. That was like right. Like that was that was that was wild. Like again, what great storytelling that was. You know what I mean? Like it was Christopher Nolan. Yeah, yeah. They all can't when when she was like, I'll I'll bring them back, and then they're all like in the in the house, just butt naked next to each other. Like, bro, butt naked. So so my thought process is this do they remember being pigs? I hope so. Like, do they remember? I hope so. Can you imagine? You get turned back into a human, you're like, bro, we were fucking pigs. Like, yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_02And and still, and still it it doesn't land in them. No, it doesn't. She made us a pig. Yeah, not dude. We should change the way we are, exactly, dude.
SPEAKER_01Maybe we should somewhere made into lions, jaguars, like because mind you, there were different animals. Yep, yep, yep. So it's like some honorable men up there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I I like to think that I would have she made me a grizzly bear and just let me exist. Damn, that'd be dope. I feel like you'd be a house cat.
SPEAKER_04Ooh, house cat. Like an orange window. Would you be okay with being a house cat?
SPEAKER_02I I mean, what? What am I gonna turn down being the most deadliest animal on the planet that just can't just isn't big enough to do anything about it? Yeah, I would love that.
SPEAKER_04Actually, so people could just pick you up constantly, kiss you on the forehead, and you're like, Yeah, I love this.
SPEAKER_02That would be fine. I would probably I'd be the grumpy cat. I'd be the grumpy cat that eventually adores it. Okay. That's what it was giving. Picking me up. Yeah, that's fucking picking me up. Stop it, all right. Stop it, stop it.
SPEAKER_04And then eventually you're like, Alright, I'm gonna let you hold me, but only for like five seconds. You better pull me back down in five seconds.
SPEAKER_02When like the affection gets too long and turn around and just pop, right.
SPEAKER_04Put me down. Five more minutes of this, I'm gonna get mad.
SPEAKER_02That's how it is, honestly. Not my fault that it's happening. I my cat would let me hold him and pet him, and then like when I would go too long or like whatever, he would then he would just be like, pop.
SPEAKER_04That's enough, human. That's enough. But no, I I think uh again, I think we mentioned it on the last set on the last episode of you know, going back to the pro the uh practical effects. Tom Holland was absolutely loving it because he most of like really like most of his career, I'll say most, because he has had other roles that didn't require him to be inside of a Spider-Man suit. But like a dinner roll. Yeah, kind of sort of instead, he made a lot of bread, anyway. Um it it was just really cool to see that he was on set with you know all of these actual effects, like like they were actually out there rowing those ships. Like, how fucking wild is that?
SPEAKER_02That's that's so fucking that's so fucking well and you saw how excited they were in the press tour to talk about it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know what I mean? Because like I understand why studios do what they do, but I appreciate that when there are people still making movies like Christopher Nolan. Is it perfect? Probably not, you know, but like he's he's doing something outside of the norm, right? And I think that that needs to be the focus of the appreciation. I understand the person who he adapted his story from has like a a thing to say about it, right? Like she has her opinion, but if Homer was here, he would probably have his opinion about her. I mean, first of all, it wouldn't be great because he'd be like, There's a woman that did my sport aside.
SPEAKER_04You're not wrong. He would have that would absolutely be his approach and be like, wait a minute, who allowed her to do?
SPEAKER_03What the fuck is going on?
SPEAKER_04Hold on, little Missy. I don't know what kind of world you're living in.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what kind of fantasy world.
SPEAKER_04Jesus Christ. But no, because and and I think this is this would be a great segue for that, because you know, there was a lot of um controversy with some of his uh cast uh casting choices. How you know they were like, Well, this person isn't Greek, that person isn't Greek, why are we doing this with XYZ?
SPEAKER_07So it's like people were like, I was gonna say I don't like people were super impressed that they cast it on Lupita. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And people were mad about Elliot Page, yeah, and I can never figure that out because when I watched the movie, I'm like, y'all are mad over 20 minutes of screen time. Not even.
SPEAKER_02Like you know the why. It's not we know why.
SPEAKER_01I know the why, like I absolutely know the why, but then when you apply it to just like real life logic, your your your feathers are so rumpled. And mind you, nobody watching that would have even known that Elliot Page was born biologically female. Nobody would ever know, no kids making that connection, and again, 20 minutes, maybe not not even 20 minutes is max.
SPEAKER_07That's a dim problem. It's the craziest thing to me.
SPEAKER_02I think it is crazy that that's like a focus uh for these
Cyclops Chaos And Witch Metaphor
SPEAKER_02poor tormented souls, really. Like uh anyway, the other thing I was gonna mention was um they did the same shit when Hamilton came out on the project right like all those characters, the founding fathers being played by people that aren't white. Like, oh my god, who gives a flying fuck, dude? Like we are adapting a story to the modern time, right? Yeah, if we were to keep telling history through the accurate air quote accurate, yeah. The accuracy first of all, there we don't even know if the accuracy is true because stories and are that we know are told by the victors. So we we don't even know if that is a true statement. Right. The only truth is that they're telling it to us.
SPEAKER_01Mind you, the story includes a cyclops. It includ like when it really breaks down.
SPEAKER_02None of it ever happened. It's a fictional story.
SPEAKER_01Too like historically accurate, like this is what this person looked like, like a biography. Sure, whatever. I'm not gonna argue with you on that one, but we're talking about story anyway.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and that's and that's where some people, you know, the they they get a little ridiculous in their arguments where they're like, Oh, okay, well, if you're gonna uh cast them in uh the Odyssey, then I should be able to make, you know, uh Robert Pettson play Martin Luther King Jr. And we're like, no, because you can't somebody said that you can't. No, I'm just saying, like, there are people that no no. Here's the thing, though. There are people I've seen on threads, there are people that do sit that do use that as an argument. They'll they'll put, you know, that's a crazy it's crazy.
SPEAKER_07The biggest one is like they're like, oh, oh, what let's have a white Black Panther.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, which to be fair, Marvel did have a white Black Panther. They did, they did do that in a in a comic run. It was I I don't remember how long it was, I don't remember when it was. I think it was like circa 2013.
SPEAKER_01But no, like you can do whatever you want. It's the same thing with the mermaid thing. Like, you're we're talking about made-up worlds. We're talking about made-up worlds, right? Honestly, with Black Panther, you put them in a suit anyway that looks like a Black Panther suit, right? Like, it's a made-up world, right?
SPEAKER_04It's made up as opposed to Martin Luther King, who's literally a real person. Yeah, you can't race swap. It goes, you know, it rings true for both ways. You know what I'm saying? Like, if if they did a biopic of like George Bush, I wouldn't expect them to cast Denzel Washington as George Bush. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_02Like, I wouldn't have a comma.
SPEAKER_04He would still kill it, he'd still kill it.
SPEAKER_02I'm telling you right now, Denzel playing Bush. Just imagine, just imagine the delivery.
SPEAKER_04Instantly, he he he wins a monster. Only once Golden Globe, Academy Award winning.
SPEAKER_02That's crazy.
SPEAKER_04Well, no, I'm just saying, like, it rings true any direction you go. If it's if the person like exists, if it's a biopic of somebody that's there, I want yes, I want you to get it accurate. You can't race swap somebody that actually existed, because that's insensitive. But if I'm coming up with a story, if I'm making shit up, like, okay, uh perfect example. This guy right here is totally made up, right? So everybody, but the problem is if they do a live action, everybody's like, they have to be Asian. Why? Because number one, they're an a he's an alien species. Nobody really knows what he looks like. You know what I mean? Like, you could fit anybody in there as long as he behaves like a Saiyan. We're good.
SPEAKER_02It's actually low-key racist to assume that they're Asian. That they're Asian just because they were created by Japanese people.
SPEAKER_04But that that's what that's the way that we'll look at it, because we're like, it's it's created in Japan, so they have to be Japanese. No, it's actually not, because they're literally made-up characters, and they're aliens, they're fucking aliens. I would guess Elba. Fucking aliens character, you know, and you know what's funny? Um, when they cast him as Heimdall in Thor, a lot of people had an issue with it. A lot of people had an issue with super pissed. Yep, with Idris Elba being Heimdall. And I'm like, again, he's a fucking comic book character. And what a great job Idj Idris Elba did as Heimdall. Like, what are we talking about? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02It'd be people people the world is more racist than I actually realize.
SPEAKER_01No, it's a really tightly held.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I never think about that type of shit. Like, like when I see a movie trailer and I'm watching it by myself and or even with other people or whatever, I never think about like who like the the nationality of the actor. Yep. Not once do I ever give any amounts of shit about it. Um even in like a uh like progressive way. I'm not like, oh, this character should be played by this. Like I'm just excited to see shit being made. Right. You know, people people pursuing their dreams. Like that's like because I'm trying to pursue my dreams. I'm I'm loving that the fact that these people that's because you don't suck.
SPEAKER_01And like sometimes I'll look at it and I'll see somebody who like isn't traditionally cast. Like, I think about the Little Mermaid, right? I didn't think about it through a political lens. I said, Oh, that's cool. Yeah, like just because you don't see it that much, where you're like, oh, that's cool. Like, there was never a thought of like this is who should be there. But like when you're so used to seeing a rendition and then you see a different take on it, you're like, Oh, that's dope. Yeah, like and it's just uh white supremacy. That's all it is. It's like deeply ingrained white supremacy that people think that white is the standard that it should be.
SPEAKER_06Correct.
SPEAKER_01And like they think that the roles are it's like a control thing.
SPEAKER_04Right. Back to you, Buckies.
SPEAKER_02Look at a you look at a you buck tooth beaver.
SPEAKER_08Buck tooth bitch. Anyway, can't be.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no. Uh I so being being someone who creates things, uh, being a creator, you often create your your creations are a reflection of you, right? Um uh in the beginning. When you when you are first starting to do it, you you start putting your p a piece of yourself goes into what you create.
SPEAKER_08Correct.
SPEAKER_02Whether it's conscious or subconscious. Uh so these products and and and things uh um that projects are getting made, like The Little Mermaid, was created by uh I don't know about originally, but like the Disney version was created by white people because that is who was working at that time, right? Not not exclusively, but majority. And I've never thought of it in that way, but what you said me seeks makes sense. It's it is deeply uh ingrained white supremacy, and sometimes white supremacy isn't inherently malicious, it is a symptom and a side effect of someone else or other people who are using it maliciously, and so like the viewership that watch these things, they're like, Little mermaid should be white because like that's how it was when I was a kid. Like that person is just uneducated and doesn't understand that they have or maybe they do, but I think I like to believe that they may not understand their their lens, and they don't even realize what they're saying. Because like casting a person of color in a in a show that you know was a cartoon that looked a certain way, and in the live action gets to look a different way, now gives a role model to a whole new category of people. Like although it doesn't need to be that way, but it is that way, right? Like it's a lot easier for people to look at a character that look and they can see themselves in them. I think I I have a mind that I can see myself in anything, it doesn't have to look like me exactly. Like I can look at an alien creature, you know, like Stitch. I can see myself in Stitch sometimes, you know what I'm saying? And like like so uh and I think everybody can do that, but it not everyone is able to do that. Um and I've ran out of my train of thought.
SPEAKER_04That's okay. I will I will say I think some people may not be willing to do that. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like willing to you know, go that go that extra mile. But I d I wanna just back up your point. I think that's one of the main reasons um behind Spider-Man and why uh Stan Lee created Spider-Man. Uh because literally anybody can put that mask on and be Spider-Man, right? Which is why which is why um I believe it was in No Way Home when Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man comes face to face with uh Electro from his world, you know, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and he makes the comment that, you know, he's like Electro tells Peter, uh, you're not who I expected to be. And he was like, What do you mean? He's like, I thought you were some you know, some black kid like me, you know what I mean? Like type deal. So the idea is anybody can put that mask on and be Spider-Man. Right. It doesn't matter who you are, it's the the the idea is you're Spider-Man, you're a symbol. Spider-Man is a symbol, right? So it's like w I know we've we we have preached representation matters. It absolutely does, because when the live action Little Mermaid first came out, there were a lot of videos of you know little girls of people, people of color, you know, children of color that are look seeing that and they're like, Oh my god, you know, they're they're seeing it almost like it's for the first time ever seeing the little mermaid on the screen. And it's like
Casting Arguments And Representation
SPEAKER_04it's just to them now, I'm being represented. You know what I mean? So it's like I don't know. Again, it's a whole made-up story about the little mermaid. We understand people cannot be mermaids, mermaids don't exist. Maybe they do, I don't fucking know, but we don't know what they look like. You know what I'm saying? Like they again, you can put anybody in those in those freaking flippers and call them the little mermaid.
SPEAKER_01I really feel like I saw myself in Athena right before they chopped off her head, though. Like up until the weight.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's the part yeah, that's the part where it stops. Yeah, oh no.
SPEAKER_07Couldn't be me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, couldn't be me, couldn't be me, couldn't be me. Oh man.
SPEAKER_02But no, that that's fair. That's fair. I have a thought that goes back to the practical effects stuff. Yes. Um the uh the horse scene.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_02Like how they like built the horse on the beach and then like was inside it. I appreciate that because like when you when you watch Troy, right? It's like up on wheels and shit, and it's upright. Yep. And like they're able to be up there and they're all safe and whatever. They're all safe. But like I like how Christopher Nolan made it like a little bit more realistic, where like you know, they built it on the beach. Well, they didn't account for where the tide's gonna go. So like now half the horse is underwater, like people are drowning drowning inside that thing. Yep. And like that, the reality, the reality of that I found very interesting. He kept it kind of like um gratifying in a way. Yeah, like it was just it was refreshing.
SPEAKER_04It was refreshing to see the realism and it being grounded, right?
SPEAKER_02It's a detail, right?
SPEAKER_01It grounds it in reality, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I think, yeah, it makes more sense when you think about the time period that like these things would have been happening if you think about the lack of like kind of advancement and resources. Like, how did they build that thing on wheels on a nice little cart on wheels and just like like a toy with a torch on wheels? Like it and then for them to be pulling it and then to have like the whole thing just kind of all of that was so cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was really cool.
SPEAKER_01I just had the thought about practical effects, which like I had the thought a few minutes ago, and then when you brought it back up, I was like, oh yeah. Um, I think it's it lends to better acting than CDI, and like you're because you're in the environment and like you can't fake that, like you're feeling the discomfort. I can only imagine how uncomfortable that scene was to actually film, right? So when you think about it in that lens, it's not acting at some point, like you're genuinely in that space.
SPEAKER_04To follow that up, one of the little details that I absolutely loved when they came out of the horse that they didn't that they couldn't just run immediately. They were literally like like they just rode a horse for hours. They were they were bent over, yeah, they were stiff because they were in that pitch for how long? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02They were they were waiting, yeah.
SPEAKER_04They were waiting for however long for them to haul that off. And I thought that was a really cool detail. They hit the ground and they're like, Holy shit, my legs exist. And I was like, Yeah, I can imagine you are like, you know, like your legs are asleep. Like, you can't, you know, you again you said when you think about Troy, they all came out just ah rushed them all. It's like, nah, it they're like, I gotta get my legs, bud.
SPEAKER_02I appreciated the the tiny details that grounds it in reality. Yeah, I think is what my final thought on that was.
SPEAKER_04No, and that and that's uh that's what I appreciated a lot about it. Again, Christopher Nolan, he just he knows what he be doing sometimes.
SPEAKER_02Like sometimes he just he just and then filming with like the 70 millimeter IMAX lens, like that's cool too. Yeah, that is I appreciate when somebody like wants to honor the craft for the sake of the craft and not just making a commercial product, like yeah, it's successful, and why is it successful? Is it successful because it's the uh a story that stood the test of time? Like it this is an old story, very old story, yeah. And everybody loves it for for whatever their reasonings are. But is it that is his movie successful because of those reasons? Is it successful because they had a rock star stacked cast list?
SPEAKER_03It was stacked.
SPEAKER_02I I think, yeah, those things help, but I also think the reason why it's so successful is because Christopher Nolan cares and and provided us a killer product.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he did.
SPEAKER_02He did, he could have made that movie with actors who we have never heard of, and I bet you it would still be as good of a I agree.
unknownAbsolutely.
SPEAKER_01I left that movie thinking, I wish I could watch it again, and I don't feel that way about many three-hour movies. Like, I think about the last time I watched, and it was Oppenheimer, and I was like, that was the worst, most grueling thing I could have ever gone through.
SPEAKER_04Oppenheimer felt like a chiller.
SPEAKER_02Really? I haven't seen it, and now I don't know if I want to. I do want to watch it, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you'll get it. You get the point, you'll get it. Um, but this was something that I was like, I could see myself when it's like released on Amazon and like out and out. I could see myself having it on and just kind of playing in the background to go back and forth. And to your point, like it's always action, and it does feel like a new story every time. And it took me a long time. And I was almost through the movie before I realized that they were like the sea bandits.
SPEAKER_04Yep. That they were the people of the sea, they were the people of the sea bandits.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it took me. And I think it's because you see it in the stories, and when you put them in each story, there's one villain in each of these things. Like the Cyclops is gonna be like, Odysseus is a dick.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01Like, yep, and you think about all those encounters, and jabbing my eye twice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the sea bandit thing is funny. I never really thought about it. I probably did, but then I've forgotten about it. And since then, you're reminding me that they created their own problem.
SPEAKER_04That's what they did. Yeah, yeah. They created their own problem.
SPEAKER_02Like the people, the people that were talking about the sea people are the people of Troy that got attacked by the sea people. That's so fucking funny.
SPEAKER_01But that was all, and I think that might be like the overarching tale of the epic and having Odysseus as the main character. That's his pitfall, is he doesn't understand how he affects the people around him. And like he didn't a lot of dudes needlessly died because he was just so focused on his mission that he wasn't looking out for the betterment until whoever it was came down and was like, This is your pro like, this is what's gonna happen to you. Yep. And he was already so far into his it was very just self-set, like a megalomaniac almost. Like he caused a lot of his problems.
SPEAKER_02It seemed like uh his time with Calypso was able to um help him reflect on like how like because he's trying to figure out like where is he and why is he.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_02And and in that moment when he's with Calypso is when he comes to the realization that I think in Troy is when he realized his actions. Cause like they're killing innocent people, yeah, essentially. Right? Like they're just pillaging, and and and his men that is following him, like they're just ruthless pigs. Yeah, and it's like he is trying to guide this chaos, but he comes to realize like there's consequences for his actions. He is the chaos, he's creating the chaos, he is, he is the chaos, and and he's kind of like that's I think that is why he didn't want to go home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and like face it and then yeah, I didn't realize until the end that it was Athena who he was talking, that Zendaya was Athena.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she was Athena.
SPEAKER_01And then I was like, this is like haunting him, like the whole thing is just about how every part of his actions and everything is really like coming back to him, but he's just caused so much destruction. And it was when you think of it through his lens, it's a battle he's fighting, and it's this kind of almost woe is me journey for him, but to everybody else, he's the pe he's the leader of the people of the sea.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yep,
Accountability Collateral Damage And War
SPEAKER_02yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_04Uh interesting. And I will say I did love Christopher Nolan's uh depiction of Hades. I absolutely I absolutely loved it. That that that whole black beach, and then you know, he had to he had to uh uh uh uh put it put the sacrifice, um, had the blood to drink, and all the people that he led it he led to their deaths essentially coming forward, and he was like, let them drink so they could speak their peace, and they're like, Hey, Odysseus, you're kind of an asshole.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I like I liked that that series of events too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was it was it was really cool because typically, you know, they show Hades and it's like all fiery and whatnot.
SPEAKER_02And but this was literally like Yeah, it was like uh Black Beach with a magma river, right?
SPEAKER_04It was just dark, yeah. It was it was dark, and I was just like, Wow, that's so cool. And then just all the souls that were lost, just you know, there's no face, just black figures, you know what I mean? Until uh until who you call it, uh uh Elliot Page's character comes up and is like, hey bud, you know, you lied to me. You didn't tell me what the fuck was going on. I died for no reason, essentially. And I'm like, from from from his lens, absolutely, absolutely you did. He had no good ideas.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I heard you. I'm still dead, motherfucker.
SPEAKER_04Like, bitch, you heard you listen to me die, like that's supposed to give me comfort.
SPEAKER_02From a strategy standpoint, I understand Odysseus's reasoning, right? Like, but like, and I think it's because that character was technically still like a kid-ish, correct, right? Like, like a young adult, right? So, like Odysseus maybe thought, like, oh, I don't think you're gonna be able to act when your life is on the line.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, you'll slip up. So I want I want I want it to feel authentic, and you may not be able to pass it.
SPEAKER_02I don't fault him for that, like that's a strategy, and like that's the thing that I feel like they didn't highlight that much, is like Odysseus was a master strategist. That's why he was he was the man chosen for the task. Like he was a brilliant mind. It's just he was facing his demons, right? Like it's a story of facing your demons and and and being accountable for your actions, and even though like your actions like it's kind of like being able to own your actions, right? Like that's kind of like a little bit of the lesson there, is like just be true to yourself and like, yeah, you are gonna make decisions that affect other people, but you have to you have to own that, and you have to you have to trust yourself and believe in yourself that those actions are worthy of the cause that you're doing. But then the outside people are gonna have their perspectives as well. So it's it's kind of like in a weird way a reflection of life. Like this is probably Homer's reflection. Well, it's been filtered a few times. Oh, several times. Several times. But but like of of the bones of the story is a reflection of us and like living this life and just being like permanent and sure of yourself, and just facing your accountabilities, I guess.
SPEAKER_04That's fair.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a story of collateral damage.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like really when you think of it, you're not intentionally hurting people, like and then uh unfortunately in the realities of war, not everybody makes it. You're going out on this crusade anyway, and you know that there's a risk. And I think Odysseus was trying to lower that risk as much as possible. To your point, he's a strategist. But though that comes with collateral damage. And I also think he was so focused on like getting home. I think some of that is also rigidity. Like there, there were probably other options for him and his crew that maybe didn't involve them getting home, that maybe involved them settling someplace else. And then the and then the answer is okay, you're gonna leave people at home suffering, but you're not gonna kill off 400 of your men in the process of it. Like it's just collateral, it's collateral damage. And when you look at it, every story is really beautifully told. Like it was really great. And it was just action after action after action. Like you're just like wondering what's going on. And then I'm always wondering, like, okay, what's going on back home? Because what's Robert Pattinson up to? Bro, such a little asshole.
SPEAKER_02He was Robert Pattinson is a really good shitty. Yes, he's a good villain. He's good at playing villains, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because what a what a piece of shit, man. I was like, dude, somebody, somebody get him out of here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, dude, have you seen the meme floating around? No, I have not. Uh oh, because there's that line where he said, uh, get these beggars out of here. Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04With the hard R. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Get these beggars out of here. Hey, hold on. Hold on, buddy.
SPEAKER_03Hang on.
SPEAKER_04That's our word.
SPEAKER_03R word is crazy.
SPEAKER_04What's up, my beggar? Anyway, I'm not gonna, I'm not, we're not gonna do that again.
SPEAKER_08We're not gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_04Wait, do I have to?
unknownHang on.
SPEAKER_04For the joke. Go ahead, Miss Mises.
SPEAKER_01I want to talk about John Liguizamo's role in the Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, he did so good. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01My I love him anyway. I think he's a fantastic. I think the range of his acting is insane.
SPEAKER_07He's phenomenal.
SPEAKER_01He is really and I think underrated.
SPEAKER_07He's like got rings.
SPEAKER_01He has so much rank, like absolutely. And and Templeton, I hope whether it's in theaters or when it comes out, whenever you take the time to like watch this, because it was just the greatest performance. Like he was probab this had to have been one of his greatest performances I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_04For sure. And and and I think I think again, especially when it comes to uh casting people, and like they kind of fall into you know those uh those roles that people remember them for. Like John Lugazamo is always gonna be Sid the Swath to me, right? Like I anytime I see him, that's yeah, that's that's all I think about is him as they they left me, they do
Hades Dog Scene And Standout Performances
SPEAKER_04this every year. So it's like that's all I whenever I see him, I'm like, man. But in this role, totally took that away from me. I'm like, okay, all right. Like, don't get me wrong, I do think he is he is awesome, as as Miss Meeseek said, he has a lot of range. He did the Mario Brothers, obviously. He's done comedies, he's done, you know, actual. I forget what it's called. There was a movie that was very um the uh uh similar to the the departed, and he played the main character in that, and oh my god, what a great movie that was. I'd have to find it and rec and I'll and I'll let you guys know, but it was fucking amazing. It was solid as well.
SPEAKER_07Don't forget about don't forget about too wong fu.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that too. So it's like he's been he's been everywhere, and just to see what really broke my heart, the dog, bro, the fucking dog, man. When they were like, he's gonna sit out there on that fucking dung pile, and it was still alive until his master came home. The moment he seen him, he tried to wag that tail and just couldn't. And I was like, ah, no, at that point, I think I was like, Yeah, that uh Robert Pattinson's character. I said, He gotta go. Said Odysseus, get in there and murder that bitch.
SPEAKER_02Like he was a bitch. He was, he was a whole bitch. He sent he sent his brother or whoever to war in his place.
SPEAKER_04Like, there's some ho ass shit. Now he's trying to snake his way into he a bum. He's a bum.
SPEAKER_01To give him that little whistle back to give him that little present for your bitch ass.
SPEAKER_04He said, How did you get this? Don't worry about it. When you see him in Hades, don't worry about it. When you see him in Hades, tell give him, tell him, hey, yeah, yeah, yeah. You have your shame back. It was great. 10 out of 10. Fucking loser.
SPEAKER_01I did think he wasn't gonna kill him at some point. Yeah, I thought he was gonna bitch out when he went through with it. I was like, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, was is Odysseus a demigod? No. Or is he a human? He's human.
SPEAKER_01He's a human. Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_02It's just the reason why I was thinking he may be a demigod is like the shit he went through and was able to survive.
SPEAKER_04It's because the gods were looking out for him and want it was his punishment by the gods, is what it was. So the gods wanted him to they were testing him and allowing him to live through his shame, right? Like it was their way of again, it was their way of punishing him, saying, Death is too good. Yeah, death is too good for you. You need to watch everybody suffer, and it it all comes back to you, buddy. You're gonna find out it all comes back to you, and you now have to live with this.
SPEAKER_02So it's almost like it's almost like they kept him alive to make sure that he would live through.
SPEAKER_04So you can see the aftermath of your consequences, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. And then they it's it's like they kept him away from home until he learned his lesson. Until he learned his lesson is what it seemed like, right? Because like Calypso is also a god and she's like guiding him along.
SPEAKER_04Yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and I'll tell you what was like the only god that wasn't super pissed at him because every other god was like you fucking.
SPEAKER_02She looked pretty content on just keeping him there forever, right?
SPEAKER_04Poseidon was not happy early on, Zeus was super pissed, and then like, come on, guys, it was so easy to have to piss off Apollo. Don't eat his cattle.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was brutal.
SPEAKER_01It was all eating his cattle, but then all but also, I mean, it was predetermined. Yeah, it was predetermined because the wind brought him up on shore, and everybody thought that that was gonna be great, and then it didn't, and then it didn't do what it wanted. It was all predetermined, and it was meant to break them down to eat the cattle. They really had no other choice. Like, really, when you think of it, like uh it wasn't.
SPEAKER_02Do you think that if they would have eaten the cattle sooner? Because here's what I thought they ate the cattle, and then Zoo was it Zeus or Apollo, whoever. Um I mean, all the gods are working together anyway.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but uh like the this the windstorm broke that was Poseidon, yeah, because Poseidon controls the the the wind and the sea. Right.
SPEAKER_01And so the windstorm would have broken if they eaten because they were gonna die anyway.
SPEAKER_02It was definitely because I'm wondering if they would have eaten sooner than the because like the whole thing was it was a trap. Yeah, they wanted to see if they would eat, and then when they do, then the storm's gonna break so they think they can get out, and they're not. It the the storm broke so they would get in the ship so they could die. Yeah, yeah, right, right. And and uh I'm wondering if they would have just held out with the storm have still broke, but then they wouldn't have died because they passed the test.
SPEAKER_04That's a it's that's a good that's a good uh that's what I wonder. We'll never know. No, I yeah, I think I think that's a good think piece. Uh it's a good conversation to have with some people to be like, you know, would it would it have been something like if they endured and not eaten the cattle, found other things to do, teach them how to fish, you know what I'm saying? They're on it they're on a fucking island, there's ocean everywhere. It does not a single person know how to, you know, cast for fish. I don't know. Maybe maybe if they seen okay, they they got resourceful, they didn't eat the cattle. Oh, all right, we can let them the storm breaks.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we can let them go. That's what I think maybe would have happened. Yeah, it's I guess the gods knew that that wouldn't happen. Yep.
SPEAKER_01The gods knew that their thought that their mind was not gonna go to we could fish. Because honestly, like to your point, to Jay's point, the moment I felt hungry and I was told I couldn't eat the cattle, I'd be fishing. The moment I felt the pain of hunger, like the moment I would have been like, I wouldn't have to be able to do that. Yeah, you can problem solve. Yeah, exactly. So the gods made sure to not, and like, I mean, they can obviously manipulate anything. So the gods made sure that his crew didn't even think about that as an option, didn't think about like creating a crop or anything as an option.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because they did say, I forgot, I forgot who mentioned it, but they did say that Odysseus's men couldn't get out of their own way, like they knew that they were going to succumb to the hunger pains, and we're gonna eat this cattle. I don't care what Odysseus says. I don't really care. I'm hungry, the cattle are here, they're not doing anything, whatever. And he that when he found him, he said, Did you think eating quietly was you know gonna gonna save you guys? Like, what are you doing? What did they say?
SPEAKER_02We just didn't want you to be mad at us or some shit. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Didn't want you to be able to do that. Yeah, like that was also a thing. Like that's true. If that would have happened earlier on in the journey, they'd probably be like, No, Odysseus said we couldn't do that. Yeah, but they were already down to a pretty slim crew, yeah. And anything that Odysseus said they couldn't do or could do resulted in catastrophic loss. Right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they just didn't trust him anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, which means they learned their lesson pretty quickly, didn't they? Whoopsie! What's up, bud? So anyway, um, I know we're gonna have to wrap this up pretty soon because we're coming up to time, but um the odd talk all day
Final Verdict And Text Us Prompt
SPEAKER_04about this movie. I listen, I I know it is it is a fantastic movie, and I cannot wait for it to uh you know come home, essentially. Like Odysseus. Yeah, can't wait for you to come home, bud. Really can't wait. Yeah. Um, so if you haven't seen it, uh it it go take go check it out. Check it out, bro. It's it's worth a watch. Yes, three hours seems like a lot, but I promise you it doesn't feel like three hours. It really does take you on a journey and explores all these stories so well. Um not there, I don't think there was a second that I thought they spent too much time, you know what I mean? They didn't linger too much on any kind of on any story that was told. So if you haven't seen it, go watch it. Christopher Nolan's the Odyssey. Tell us how you like it. Do you like did did you like his casting decisions? Were you were you against it? Let us know. Text us. Hey, don't forget, you can text us. There's a little button up there that says text us here. So anyway, we'll go ahead and try to wrap this
Worst Possible Rambo Casting Game
SPEAKER_04up. Um does anybody want fun in games? I don't know, some people don't. So I'm gonna give you a task, and I bet Yeti is gonna listen to this and be like, man, I wish I was part of this episode. Your job is to pick the most awful actor to play Rambo and go.
SPEAKER_07Nicholas Cage.
SPEAKER_03Oh, really? I don't know. The most awful actor to play.
SPEAKER_04The most awful actor actresses, or are we ghost males? Just the most awful actor to play Rambo. Could be male, female, doesn't matter. Awful actor to play Rambo.
SPEAKER_02Do they have to be traditionally an actor, or they can matter.
SPEAKER_04As long as famous per se as long as they are an actor. Oh, oh no, no. Oh, they have to be an actor. Yeah, they have to be an actor. Okay. Jennifer Coolidge. Jennifer Coolidge is Rambo. That would be crazy.
SPEAKER_01Jennifer Coolidge is crazy.
SPEAKER_04That's a good answer. That's a good answer.
SPEAKER_01That's a good answer. I don't know how I get man. That's such a good answer.
SPEAKER_02Whoa. I have an answer. I have an answer that would cancel me, so I'm not gonna say it.
SPEAKER_01No, I want to hear it. I had I had some pretty controversial answers in my head. I mean, I want to hear them.
SPEAKER_02I'll fuck it. Peter Dinklage. Ooh, Peter.
SPEAKER_08That's Peter Dinklage is right.
SPEAKER_07Damn you for being better than me, Chris. Damn you! Insane.
SPEAKER_04They would call it exactly where I'm going. They would call it Lil Rambo.
SPEAKER_02I know I know exactly where my seat in hell is, but it's right next to mine, goddamn.
SPEAKER_01That's fantastic, 10 out of 10. Uh I would say Ariana Grande.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god, Ariana Grande. It's uh Rambo suddenly turns into a musical.
SPEAKER_02She's like. I can't even think of like a famous Rambo quote at the moment.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. That's crazy. She's like Adrian. Adrian!
SPEAKER_04Oh my god. Okay.
SPEAKER_07That's Rocky, but it's still cool.
SPEAKER_04Right, right. The most awful actor to play Rambo. I would. Oh my god. I would go ahead and say it'd be weird to see Reese Witherspoon as Rambo.
SPEAKER_08What like it's hard.
SPEAKER_01But there's a lot of illegally blonde in here. Yeah, honestly. Honestly, honestly, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I think that's where it comes from is just thinking legally blonde, but as Rambo. Yeah. Like, oh my god, what do I do? I don't know what the biggest is. There's so many, there are so many bullets. What do I do with these?
SPEAKER_02See, and you I feel like we're we're playing this game wrong because each more suggestions would be a banger.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, honestly, honestly. You'd have I would watch I would watch the fuck out of all of those. Not gonna lie, to watch Lil Rambo would probably be. Peter Dinklage would give it his all too. He would be he would. Yeah. Because here's the thing. We did we all see Game of Thrones? Kindergarten cop, like Danny DeVito in Kindergarten Cop. Like, I feel like Peter Dinklage would knock it out of the park. I just I wouldn't be able to take it seriously, though, because you know the general's coming up to him. He's like, hey, uh John Rowling, one more time. I need you to come back and save these people, these prisoners of war. And he's just looking up at him the whole time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's the best part is like everybody would be undermining him, and he would be outperforming everything.
SPEAKER_04That's what I'm saying. Like, can you imagine the entire movie of Lil Rambo? It has to be titled Lil Rambo, too, by the way. The entire premise is just everybody Rambo and small font. Right, Rambo. But everybody in the like every character in the movie just looking down on him literally and figuratively until it's go time, and he just like just straight mows them down.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04It'd be the most Rambo thing to ever happen. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But also Reese Reese Witherspoon or with a or with a knife.
SPEAKER_02Without a knife. Um, like a legally blonde twist on Rambo. Rambo would be hilarious.
SPEAKER_07Oh my god, you're totally dead now. Totally.
SPEAKER_01Guys, if we could just camouflage doesn't even really matter.
SPEAKER_04Not gonna lie, these fatigues are not your style.
SPEAKER_03We're gonna have to you look like a hot dog. You didn't want a hot dog, real man.
SPEAKER_01You look like the fourth of July. Everybody's getting blown up and she's gonna be like, it looks like the fourth of July.
SPEAKER_04This makes me want to imagine, can you imagine she just she just shooting the 50 cal? Like, everything is exploding. It looks like the 4th of July.
SPEAKER_03This makes me want a hot dog real bad.
SPEAKER_02You're so totally dead. So the camera, the camera, the camera angle is uh facing her, and you like you so you see this angle, right? Yep, and then the camera pans over and it looks at what she was shooting at, and she's completely missed out. Just missing everything. Yeah. Or or or it's a wall and it's like it's like fireworks, like a fourth of July node or some shit.
SPEAKER_04That's that's beautiful. That's beautiful. Just the American flag. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For freedom, bend and snap. Anyway, let us know. Let us know who you would pick as the most awful actor to play Rambo. They might turn out to be bangers, you know what I mean? Like you might, you might, you might at first think it's funny and think it's a joke, but then you start to really dive in and you're like, I'd watch that. I'd watch I'd spend my money on it.
SPEAKER_07Uh every every one might give up. I'd be like, yeah, I'd watch that.
SPEAKER_04Honestly, honestly, it just it would be weird at first. I'd have it, you'd have to give me a minute to get over it, but I'd watch it. I'd watch it. Yeah. Yeah. I'd I'd watch it, but I have to get over it first. So, all right. Let us know who you would pick. Um, fun fact.
Mirrors And The Myth Of Infinity
SPEAKER_04Who wants a fun fact, real quick?
SPEAKER_02Not me. I do.
SPEAKER_04Not you, Tebbleton. Okay, well, I mean, you can leave if you want to, if you don't want the fun fact.
SPEAKER_03You need to leave! You need to leave! You need to leave. All right, anyway, C TFO, motherfucker. Anyway.
SPEAKER_04D you know. That mirrors facing each other don't produce infinite reflections. What? That's a lie. I swear to God. I swear to god.
SPEAKER_02What do they produce? Can we see what they produce?
SPEAKER_04Do you do you want to produce a hole? You know, they produce a problem. So anyway, do two mirrors face each other. Join us next week. Well we find out what mirrors produce. So do two mirrors facing each other actually produce infinite reflections? While they seem to extend into the infinite, a truth the truth is a little darker. Now I think that might be a play on words here, because it's always fun to look at the multiple reflections formed by opposing mirrors in lifts, washrooms, and the like. But while they seem to extend into the infinite, in reality, they get progressively darker and fade into invisibility long before they get there. That's because mirrors absorb a small fraction of the energy of the light striking them each time. Thus, even the best mirrors are unlikely to generate more than a few hundred visible reflections. So it's not infinite, it's only a couple hundred reflections that you're seeing. Just looks infinite, because it's a lot of reflections. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_07Mirrors don't see black people is what you're telling me. I don't think that's what he's telling you.
SPEAKER_04That's not what that's not what I said at all. That's not what I said at all. If that's your takeaway, I don't know. Uh brother.
SPEAKER_02So theoretically, yeah. Theoretically, if we could boost light, because what's happening is because the the mirrors are absorbing the light, correct? It's it's taking the energy away. So if there was a way that we could theoretically boost the amplification of the light to a point where it can account for the the light consumption would it there then for be infinite.
SPEAKER_04I'm willing to bet I'm willing to bet Um because you know Science, right? They say that you'll never ever ever ever nothing will ever be able to go faster than light. The speed of light is the universal speed limit. You can get very, very close, as Neil deGrasse Tyson told us. You can get to like 0.9999. You can always add another nine after that, but you will never ever ever ever get to the speed of light. Why? Because only things that don't have matter can get that quick. That's why, that's why, you know, uh uh the the protons and photons or whatever it is that's you know in light, they can go that fast because they're massless. They can hit that speed because they're massless. So, what I think what would happen is you could get A pretty big number in reflections, but I don't think you'll ever reach infinity. Like it'll literally be you'll get closer every single time. Like it'll be like that extra nine after the decimal every single time. But I don't think you'll ever get an infinite number of mirrors.
SPEAKER_01That's just Yeah, I feel like there has to be some type of equation that always equates to like zero almost. Like there's an ending point.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01And like regardless of how much energy you put into it, like it has it probably offsets it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You'll add you'll you'll continue to add another mirror, but I don't know if that's what they would, you know, like more powerful light source.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02To make a it's only two mirrors, right? Correct. Two mirrors facing each other. Right. And then they're cre they're creating uh hypothetically infinite reflections of themselves.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_02But the light that is being absorbed is slowly diminishing over, say whatever the equation is.
SPEAKER_08It's like a half-life.
SPEAKER_02We'll say a thousand reflections. I'm reducing this down because infinite is forever. It's forever. So say say a thousand reflections, the light the light is only a thousand reflections of light. And then after that it fades, and then we perceive it to go into infinity, but because it's it's just fading light. So if at a thousand reflections, we have a device that can amplify the light to go to reflect like two thousand reflections.
SPEAKER_04Like I said, you'll always you'll always add another reflection, but I don't think you'll ever get to infinity.
SPEAKER_02I think is where I'm but it wouldn't the act of always adding another reflection get if if if that equation is I can keep adding one, then you are achieving infinity.
SPEAKER_04Technically, no, because infinity would be it would it's just ongoing. Like, I mean, you have a finite stop.
SPEAKER_02You're always adding one.
SPEAKER_04Well, you have a finite stop. That's that that's I think that's the point is you have you have a hard stop. You have a number that you stop at. So at 2000, so you'll get to 2001. Right. You'll get to 2001, but you know, it'll start fading after 2001. Then you'll get 2002, then it'll start fading at 2002, then you'll then you get 2003. You'll you'll always be able to add another mirror. The idea of infinity would be you'd be clearly able to see an infinite number of mirrors without the light dissipating. Like the light would have to stay at the same level of energy the entire time. And then you could, I don't know if you'll be able to see that far. I'm sure eventually they all just kind of converge because of you know perspective reasons.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, because it gets so small that you can't switch it on a mirror.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that you can't that you can't really see it unless you go through the mirror, like let's, let's, let's go inception here, and you can walk through the mirror and just kind of walk down a hall of mirrors, and it's just an endless hall of mirrors. But like what we're what they're describing is you walk down a hall of mirrors, and at mirror number 1000, the mirrors start to get a little bit dimmer, and you're like, oh, I'm running out of hallway, right? So it's like right. I think that's just kind of how they're describing it. But I don't know, I'm no scientist, I'm not Neil deGrasse Tyson. I'm not that was a fun one. I liked that one. It was fun, right? It was it was good times. So I know infinite hallways. That's right. Exactly. See, he gets it, he gets it. So do with that information what you will. I know that um knowledge is power, and I don't know if uh does anybody want to hear about the um top listening areas because they have changed.
SPEAKER_02Before we do that, go ahead.
Giant Joint Logistics High Thought
SPEAKER_02I want to share my I want to share my high thought. Oh, that's right, I totally forgot. Oh well. Okay, so this is an organic high thought that me and a friend had recently. If you were a giant, me like you know, like the cyclops, if you were a giant that was stood uh 200 feet tall or whatever, what would you use to roll a joint? What type of like material would you find? Would it be like the side of a building? Or would you like layer up a bunch of trees and like you know, like because everything is uh you operate within this world and you're just a giant, but there's not like giant things made for you because you everything's small, you're such a minority that everything is small, everything's small. So there isn't like mass production giant paper and giant clothes, like you have to this this could get deeper. Like you we could ask, like, what would you use for clothing? But I'm more curious about if you were to roll a joint, what would you use?
SPEAKER_01It's like a big, like tropical leaf, you know, those big, huge tropical leaves. Oh no, no, no, this is not your question. Um leaves. And I don't know if you know what I'm talking about, but they're like that's what I would use.
SPEAKER_02Just get a bunch of those together to like make it big enough.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm thinking about scaling it because it probably would be big enough.
SPEAKER_02Because like when you think about the size compared to us, like well that's the thing, like like you're existing in this world with all the materials that humans have made like let's scale it.
SPEAKER_01Uh so that's on I am considering scale, that it would probably be I mean, for us it would be manageable, but like it to the scale.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It would be something that's not out of it's not something that we would do. Like it wouldn't be possible to do that. But if you take one of the big boys that are like big boys, yeah, they're like huge tropical leaves, and I wish I knew what they were called. But like if you take one of those, they're probably the size of a day.
SPEAKER_04Maybe or or would it be more like because I mean, how giant is giant are we talking? Like, how big?
SPEAKER_02I'm talking like you if you were to stand up, you're like 200 feet tall.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, yeah. I gotcha.
SPEAKER_02You know, like the the size of like a 10-story building. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_01Like 30 times in size.
SPEAKER_02Right, right. So, like if you're looking out at a tree, the tree would look like a shrub to us right now.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay. Uh because for me, I'd be like, I feel like anything you use, everything would feel like a roach, right? Like it wouldn't be a full size.
SPEAKER_02See, and that's the thing. So you gotta get creative. Like, would you take like I don't know, the the the side of a a well a building would crumble, but like you know what I mean? I'm trying to think of things that I would take. I would maybe take like I was thinking like getting like a car and like turning it into like a pipe that I could smoke out of it. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04You have a whole exhaust system.
SPEAKER_07So I mean, maybe I was just gonna say, like, most properties have a specific type of flag.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, we talked about like a giant flag in a building. Could do that, could do that.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't sure how it burn. I mean, it does flags do burn.
SPEAKER_02They do deburn in the bigger, material and kind of layer the parachutes together. They do valid, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you know, you know what you could do? Like those giant smokestacks, that could be your bong. Oh, like you just go find a thing somewhere, you know what I'm saying? They probably have a whole bunch of entire tall stacks, exactly.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, go find a riverboat somewhere, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You could, yeah, we could okay, we can containers. All right, we got this. We're using our giant brains.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that one was a fun one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that is a good one.
SPEAKER_02You know what could be visitable too, because we could interchange like the things you
What Do Cartoons Watch On TV
SPEAKER_02do.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04For sure. I do want to bring up the one that I that I did tell that I asked you or told you about the other day about um I I was just watching a video and they were like, somebody had to be high when they thought about this. But how does somebody in a cartoon know when they are watching a cartoon or a live action show? So imagine in like Family Guy or s or The Simpsons, they're watching TV. How do they know? Are they watching a live action or is it also a cartoon?
SPEAKER_02What if, okay. Maybe I'm thinking maybe I'm not playing this game correctly. What if in their universe, like the the not universe, their medium, they're like in a cartoon, they they don't have the understanding that there is cartoons or live action. Okay. Like they just have the one understanding, which is their reality.
SPEAKER_04That's fair.
SPEAKER_02Uh like they maybe they're like they're not uh advanced enough to think that we can like we we are thinking of different mediums, like they're they're just like this is it, this is what it is. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I think I've seen some cartoons in which the animation on the TV is different.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01So when they're watching TV, and I wonder if it's their same animation style that's live action, it's a different animation style.
SPEAKER_04That's actually not that's not a bad answer for them. That's not a bad idea.
SPEAKER_01I've seen that in practice. I can't think of where I've seen that, but like it'll be like a Pixar movie, but what's on TV is like very old animation style.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, like hand-drawn 2D 2D animation. I'm with you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or if it's like Scooby-Doo and then they see TV and maybe it's in 16-bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what, you know what I was thinking when I when I you know got in the shower because water has to be present for me to have great ideas. Um I was thinking as the running joke for a cartoon, because cartoons always be telling jokes, right? So I think the running joke for that would be, you know, I'm I'm just envisioning a Family Guy cutaway where they're like, hey, the new live action uh Lion King just came out. You want to go see it? And what they do to do the live action is, you know, for the cartoon, for the animated version, keep the talking lions, but for the live action, it's literally Jane just James Earl Jones playing this Mufasa.
SPEAKER_01Like a family guy style James Earl Jones playing Mufasa.
SPEAKER_04Playing Mufasa. And they're like, that's the live action because it's actually the actor voicing Mufasa playing Mufasa. And it's like, Scar, help me. And he's like, get out of here.
SPEAKER_01He just kicks his feet. He's like, This is super random, but like this was such an easy like thing for me to think about because like my brain thinks in cartoons. When I perceive the real world, like when I perceive the world and I think of situations, like my imagination starts going, it's strictly in a cartoon visual in my head. That's fair. Everything I think about is in a cartoon context. That's fair.
SPEAKER_04Like Looney Tunes Score.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So like our build my my work, we have some it's set out funny, like it's set up super funny. And I'm like, why can't we just like take a corner and just move it out? Why can't we just like unstack it and move it over? And like sometimes my brain overscans in those ways where I'm like, why can't we just take the corners and stretch it out? And it's very like cartoony in the way that my mind processes information.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I get it.
SPEAKER_01Unfortunately, even though I know it's not reality. Like sometimes when I think about like how accidents happen, I think like splat and like but I know that's not how it happens. Like I know that we're seeing and then we live in a power.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it does it do be splatten, but it's there's a lot of more details. Yeah, a lot of more details.
SPEAKER_01And it gets pretty graphic, so but anyway, there's probably some like brain protection there. It's probably some for sure.
SPEAKER_04For sure. Yeah. To kind of it it waters it down for you. But before we before we go, we put and put a pretty little
Top Listening Cities And Local Love
SPEAKER_04bow on it. Um, just our top listening areas have changed so much. So hang on, give me one, two, three, four. Okay, so the top five right now.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04From five to one, we've gotten very local. So coming in at number five, Newport, Kentucky.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Coming in number four, Seattle, Washington. So probably Grizz listening to us a bunch. Oh Grizz. I'm kidding. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Uh tied at number three is Dayton, Ohio, and Edgewood, Kentucky. That's all you. And then coming in at number two, Columbus, Ohio. That's me. And a very, very close, close second, by the way. But coming in at first, number one, Cincinnati.
SPEAKER_07That's also me. Hey.
SPEAKER_04Cincinnati, Ohio.
SPEAKER_07So top two, baby!
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we got we we've gotten very local. I don't know what happened. So I will say, um Maybe Germany moved to Cincinnati. Well, Cincinnati. Nope. Maybe. But uh Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany has shown up on the list again, but they're a little bit further down. They're like number six. So they're coming back slowly. Maybe they're maybe they're warming up to the uh female protagonist. Damn.
unknownWait.
SPEAKER_01I dead ass things. I had a bit of a drop out. They're like, I don't know about it all this.
SPEAKER_04For the joke.
SPEAKER_00Being like, dang it, we didn't make it in to the top five. Yeah, they got that.
SPEAKER_04That's what I'm hoping. Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for, is that they're like, oh man, we didn't, we're not in the top five anymore. Maybe they were. Maybe they were. Could you imagine? They're like, our our whole internet was down in the entirety of Frankfurt, Germany. Like, dang, dude. It sounds like you have Spectrum. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. For the joke before I make Spectrum mad at us, and they're like, How dare you? So, anyway, yeah, for sure.
